Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens..

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run the patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

64-bit drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Hi Rick,

Didn't work. The same "A problem occurred during hardware installation...." message came up right away during the installation process. I remembered to turn off the firewall and antivirus before installation as we had done before. I've tried a different usb cable that was working with the previous HP printer. The FixIt button was the same I used before when the printer service didn't appear in Printers in Control Panel. Then it worked to make them appear. Also, when the printer queue has documents printing it's impossible to delete the current printing document. Successive attempts can be deleted but the first remains. I can't run uninstall until after doing things like uninstall the driver and click to delete the printer in Printers, Control Panel. The printer says then it's deleting but never disappears. Running the Dell removal patch gets rid of it all though.

Still printless, Don

Rick,

It has occurred to me that when the printer was working it had a drive letter associated with it, and it was working as a removable device rather than as strictly a plug and play device. I have:

Drive A:  3.5 floppy drive.

Drive C: Master hard drive.

Drive G: Slave hard drive.

Drive D: DVD/RW drive.

Had Drive E: When I had a removable storage device plugged in.

Had Drive F: When it was associated with the printer. It puzzled me at the time why the printer had the option of being safely removable or not. Does that make any sense?

Thanks, Don

Don,

I would disconnect the printer and restart your computer. You have installed the drivers from before, so when you plug the printer back into the USB Prot, I would think it  would find the printer, again.

What do you see when you go to start, control panel, printers? Is the printer there? Is the printer default? Is the printer online?

Rick,

Well. I did the above without positive results. The printer panel in control panel shows the printer present, the default printer, and status shows as ready.

I did pursue the problem of not being able to clear the printer queue and used Microsoft's Step D, which is a different FixIt Button to stop spooler service. It's identified as Microsoft FixIt50031. After running the FixIt program and selecting Cancel All Documents in the Printer Queue panel the print job does delete and it is then possible to open a new Word document and print one request. The next document won't print. The FixIt button has worked a few times now.

Are there services that need to be looked into. I remember when working on my son's Dell laptop last summer it was necessary to restart some services. It worked for awhile but Dell support ended up advising me to reformat his hard drive. That always seems to work.

Thanks, Don

Don,

The only services I have know to work with the printer.

Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type

services.msc

Hit enter. Look for something lkike dlcj_service. Make sure it's set for automatic and restart the service. Also look for Print spooler, make sure it's set for automatic and restart the service.

Did you try using this? Delete Print Jobs

Rick,

The services.msc panel had a "dlcx_device" entry which was set for automatic. I restarted it, did the same for Print spooler, rebooted without success. I tried DeletePrintJobs link also and ran the cmd file. That had no helpful result either.

I'd like to know what you think of this web based suggestion found at the following url:

http://www.askdrtech.com/solutions/post/Troubleshooting-printer-spooler-problem.aspx

In particular the editing the registry steps.

Thanks, Don

Don,

Before you proceed with any changes in the registry, I always recommend making a system restore point. That way is there is a problem, system restore will undo what you did.

The Dell Printer is made by Lexmark, so I'd say try it and see what happens. I did send a private message to the Printer Liaison and he's off until Monday, so maybe he can shed some light on this.

Rick,

Wow, made by Lexmark. I attempted the first step in the URL and there was no LexBCE Server to disable. I will work on the remaining steps Monday evening. Perhaps the Printer Liaison will be able to contribute in the meantime.

You must not be getting much rest,

Don

I sent out an email and got the following questions back:

1.       Have the printer work on this PC before?

2.       Check for USB communication.

a.       Connect the usb cable  to the PC and  turn the printer on.

b.      Look at the system tray and see if XP  detects the USB device and try’s to install a Windows XP driver.

3.       If yes to 2 above, Run the  printer SW install and when it gets to the “Connect USB” prompt,  see if it detects the  USB device and continues the SW installation.

4.       Is no to 2/3 above, try other USB ports on the PC and loop the USB cable to try to change the cable impedance.

If you can get me the answers to these I can pass them along.   Although, you may find it quicker / easier to contact Tech Support directly to see if they can help you faster.

Don,

I heard for one person and they were going to have the people from the product group look at it and see what they can find.

Hi,

My Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 926 keeps displaying "Install a color print cartridge on the right side."  I put the color cartridge into the printer several times, but the message keeps displaying. Tried turning the printer off and on. The messages continues to display. The black ink prints fine, but no color will print. The warranty is expired. Does anyone know what to try next?

Thank you.

Rick,

Reference the above questions:

1 - Yes. I installed the new printer in September or October of 2009. It worked reasonably well except for an occasional loss of the printer from the Control Panel, Printers panel. Running the Microsoft FixIt 50126 button to restart spooler service corrected the problem.

2 - Yes. With the Dell printer drivers not installed, and the USB cable connected, when I turn on the printer there are balloon notifications from the system tray saying the printer is detected. Windows appear eventually saying the drivers weren't found.

3 - Yes. With the Dell printer drivers installed the same occurs except early on in the installation sequence there is a notification that there was a hardware installation problem and the hardware might not work correctly.

4 - I've used two different length USB cables on all four remaining USB plugin positions. I've also now tried looping one of the cables with no success. Also, I've tried a USB camera hookup and flash drive. Both were recognized, installed, and operate normally.

I have not yet tried the web page help that partially had to do with Lexmark printers.

Thanks for your continued help, Don

iceskating,

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 9 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 9 color cartridge.

You are using Dell Series 9 ink cartridges, correct?

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

Black cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

It is possible to get a Dell Series 9 cartridge with a bad sensor. Contact the place of purchase for a replacement.

Rick,

Thank you. That helped a lot. The orange error light and error messages continue to display, but the printer prints both black and color now.

iceskating,

Try downloading the 926 Printer Manual and click on troubleshooting, then error messages. There it will tell you what the error messages mean and what to do. Below that are error codes and they also explain what to do.
