Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens..

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run the patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

64-bit drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Rick,

Sorry still struggling with this one.

Brief history: My father had an old Dell machine, running Windows XP, and about 1 year ago purchased a new Dell 926 Printer which has been working fine. Unfortunately his Dell Computer finally blew up and I convinced hime to buy a new one. He now has a shiny new Dell Inspiron 545MT with Windows 7 pre-loaded

Problem: I still can't get his Dell 926 Print to be recognised by Windows 7. It keeps telling me that the version of Operating System I have does not support the pronter driver I have.

What I've tried: I've follwed you suggestion below, namely

1) Took the power lead out of the printer and disconnected the USB cable

2) Manually deleted the printer

3) Ran the patch mentioned above which completed

4) Ran Windows Update and applied all available upgrades

5) Went to the Java website and downloaded the latest version

6) Downloaded the Vista drivers for the Dell 926 Printer

7) Then I rebooted the machine

8) Expanded the drivers from the download

9) Located the setup.exe and changed the Compatability Mode to Windows Visat SP2, pressed Apply and then Run As Administrator

But I still get the same problem. It's getting a bit frustrating now as I don't know where to go next.

Thanks for any help.

ThreeLions,

Let's try to keep it simple.

Since you have everything updated, let's try...

Disconnect the printer. Run the patch until you're prompted to restart your computer. If the patch does not run, then try running it in the Vista compatibility mode. When the patch is donw running, you'll get prompted to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Now make sure the printer drivers are gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Try installing the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode. You should then see the agreement and follow the instructions. When you see the message, the printer is not connected, connect the printer(powered on) at this time. Please use a 6ft or smaller USB Cable.

What happens? Any error messages? If so, what is the exact error message.

Hi Rick, appreciate the help on these forums.

I've been having similar problems with my 926. I cannot scan, copy or fax. I get the error, scan failed in each instance. I have uninstalled the printer and reinstalled from the original software but no dice.

I tried to follow the steps you laid out, run the patch, etc but now I am having issues doing that. When I download the patch or a driver update, windows (Dell Driver Download Manager) says there is no file to download and the program exits. Stuck there.

Any ideas?

JosefT,

The Dell Download manager has been a problem for some people.

How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager should help you get the drivers you need. Please use Internet Explorer to download the drivers.

Basics as above, disconnect the printer. Run the patch to completely remove the printer. Restart your computer when prompted. Install the drivers for your system. If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode. Connect the printer when you get the message, the printer is not connected.

Was able to download and run the processes like you recommend. After doing it all and re-booting, I am still unable to scan, fax or copy.

Ack.

JosefT,

Make and model of your computer and operating system helpful.

You should be able to copy a document by putting it under the glass. B&W and color. If you cannot do this, the printer might not nstall properly.

Hi Rick. I have a Dell XPS 410 Running Vista 32 bit.

I have never been able to scan, fax or copy. Printing works fine though.

Looking at device manager, the scanner has a driver error. Despite running the factory install disk, it appears the scanner still didn't get the drivers needed. Every effort to update drivers via windows has failed.

Is there another way/source?

I have run the steps you have suggested.

thanks,

Josef

Josef,

Let's try it this way...

Disconnect your printer.

Run the patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. You will get a prompt to restart your computer. Make sure the printers drivers are gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Install the proper Vista 32-bit drivers. You get a prompt that the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time.(powered on) If it doesn't install, then try different USB Ports.

JosefT,

You are using Dell Series 9 ink cartridges, correct?

If you cannot copy a document when you put it unbder the glass, then...

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has.

Power on the printer. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 9 Black cartridge. make sure all the tape is off the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 9 color cartridge.

You are using Dell Series 9 ink cartridges, correct?

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 9 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

Black cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)          Color cartridge = color side(right side)

It is possible to get a Dell Series 9 cartridge with a bad sensor. Contact the place of purchase for a replacement.

iceskating,

Try...

Delete Print Jobs, then restart your computer. When you go to print from Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader, etc..., click on file, print and make sure the proper printer isselected.

Hello,

My Dell Photo all in one 926 printer is plugged in and turned on, but there is a print job stuck in the printer queue. I tried cancelling it several times, but it won't delete. The status is "Deleting."  I tried turning everything off and unplugging the printer and the brick, but the queue is still stuck. There isn't anything in the online help about this.

The operating system is Windows Vista Ultimate ver. 6.0 and the computer is Dell XPS M1330 notebook.

Thank you.

Like several others on this thread I too have run the above fix. (the one where you use the R166248 utility, then reload the drivers) It works, every time. The problem is that every other day or so The printer stops communicating again. (the "every time" was a hint). Searching other sites I have read that there might be a problem with either the firewall or the automatic downloads. It takes 15 minutes or so to fix the communicating problem. Other aspects of printer run fine, (scan, copy) and after the above fix I can print. I have a Vista operating system.  and I was hoping you could tell me what is happening overnight to stop the printer communications? oh, and how do I fix it. Thanks. five thumbs

fivethumbs,

I'm guessing that your using the USB ports to connect your printer to your computer. I do both of these tweaks on all my computers in my household. See if this stops the communications error messages.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

--------------------------------------

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
