Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens..

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run the patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

If using Windows 7 also try...Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

64-bit drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

If using Windows 7, use the Vista drivers in the compatibility mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista(Try Vista SP2). Then install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

JoshuaR,

There are at least 5 pages of threads. I have helped many with getting their printers working. It is most helpful if you give me the make and model of your computer and operating system and tell me how you're trying to connect your 926 printer to your computer. If you recently reinstalled the operating system, that is also helpful as there is an order to install the drivers.

Please try not to say, I have the same problem. Each situation can be different because some have issues with firewalls and virus programs blocking printer communications.

Hello I'm new to the forums so if my questions are a bit dumb please excuse me. I have an AIO 926 and I'm trying to get it to work with my desktop...a Dell Dimension E520 running Windows 7 X64. Now I've followed ALL the instructions here...and tried it numerous times and nothing works. My problem is when I run the setup (in compatibility mode of course), it gets through the first few steps but when it reaches the screen to connect the printer....it's stuck there...I've tried switching USB ports, removing the power brick from the printer for 30 seconds and reinstalling again....trying to remove the printer COMPLETELY and reinstalling....nothing works...I have no idea what I'm doing wrong....My OS has been installed for a few months well and reinstalling windows is not something I'd like to try as I don't have the time and this is my main computer. I hooked up the printer to a laptop, running Windows 7 32 bit and the install went just fine...printer worked like a charm....I really don't know what could cause this so PLEASE HELP...I really need to use it as I have a few assignments coming up....Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance....

Well i tried running the patch...and it just remained there for like 20mins or so...and then i went and ended a setup task in the task manager and it prompted me to restart the computer...I did that about 3 times I think...that same exact process....so i dont think the patch is working correctly and yupp i only tried the vista 64 bit drivers...and i did it just as you said...run in compatibility for Vista SP2 then right click and left click run as administrator....Any suggestions ?

Jonathan_337,

Did you disconnect the printer and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until prompted to restart your computer?

Did you try installing the Vista 64-bit drivers in the compatibility mode? Do NOT check the box run as administrator. When you go to install the drivers, right click on it, then left click run as administrator.

Jonathan_337,

I have seen issues if there is a print job stuck. Try Delete Print Jobs

Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Virus programs and firewalls hinder printer communications.

Jonathan_337,

It seems you have an issue with your USB Ports. I was told that you need to go to Drivers & Downloads, enter your service tag number and reinstall the chipset drivers. If that doesn't work, try posting in the Dell Desktop Forum and someone there will help you.  Just tell them your USB Ports are not working properly.

But when im in the device manager i plugged in and out the printer's usb and the device manager read that it was disconnected and reconnected...does that still mean there could be a problem with the usb ports ?

Jonathan_337,

I have seen it where some features of the usb ports work and some don't. On my laptop, I uninstalled everything un the USB Section, starting with the usb root hubs and working my way to the top. You have a desktop and doing this would disable your keyboard and moude and I think the only way to correct these problems is to reinstall the chipset drivers. Windows will tell you everything is working ok.

You could try this tweak and see if it helps.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Every time I power on my printer I get the "Cover Open" error message when it is clearly not open.  I have removed and replaced the arm that holds the top portion in place, searched for any sort of pressure trigger that needs to be surpressed to operate.  I have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers on my computer (which doesn't matter since it does this regardless of whether or not the printer is hooked up to the computer.  Basically, there is nothing that I can find that would indicate the cover is not already completely closed.

I have unplugged the power and adapter for extended periods of time, including holding down the power button to reset it.  I'm completely unable to use any of the printers functions.  I have removed and replaced the ink cartridges as well.  Any ideas?

 mrowcamj,

Sorry for the delay. I finally got a change to get my old printer out to look for the cover switch. The two Dell printers that I have, the Dell 964 Printer and the Dell V715w, Printer, both have a plastic piece attached to the flatbed scanner, that seems to hit the switch.

Diw you try unplugging the power cord from the wall and removing the power brick from the printer for 60 seconds to reset any error messages the printer is getting?

The 926 has no visible close trigger.  I have unplugged the power in every possible combination for multiple durations of time up to and surpassing 60 seconds.

Hi,

I am having a very annoying problem when trying to install drivers for my Dell AIO 926 after a recent Windows 7 upgrade on my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop.

I have tried all of the advice I can find and nothing works. I keep getting the same message that says : Installation error: Your version of the Windows operating system does not work with your new printer.

Its Windows 7 32 bit professional. I have run the patch to uninstall everything, set the driver package to Vista SP2 compatibility mode, run as admin, updated Java, run all the Windows updates etc etc etc. Nothing works. I just keep getting the same error.

Please help as this printer is vital to my education.

Thank You,

JB

Rick, after much uninstalling and installing drivers, etc. I found your community post on the Dell 926 Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error I kept getting.  Followed your instructions using patch, changed black inkjet cartridge, and I am happy to say that everything works just fine now.  Thanks so much for your continued efforts to help people with computer problems.  Dennis
