Thanks for the Dell wisdom, I did take the whole printer apart and actually fixed the piece of junk.  I really do not know how long it will work before going back into it's coma.  Hope you can fix yours, if you need to know what I did to make it work again, please do not hesitate to ask. Have a nice day.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know how to take the printers apart nor together, but if you can tell me what you did, maybe I can have someone do it for me.

Thanks for the info.

Hi, I also have the wonderful A490, could you perhaps give me some guidance as to what I have to do to fix it. I've taken it apart quite a few times, I am getting the 0502 error code and it is continually looking for a paperjam. Thanks for any help you can give me, I'm just trying to salvage it. Thanks!

They also told me they could do nothing since it was over a year old (its 15 months). How did you fix it? Thanks

You don't have to take it apart. The encoder strip either needs to be cleaned or re-positioned. Be very careful not to disconnect though. It is extremely hard to get it back on, but with some patience, possible. Here is the link that shows you what it should look like:

Let me know if this helps!
