Dell Printer 720

Hi, I'm back.  I got a Dimension 2400 with the free Dell printer which I could not get to communicate from printer to computer.  I did everything I could, but no luck.

I asked Dell for an exchange, no problem, sent me a new one the next day.  However, I've got the same problem.

I must be missing something.  I've checked and rechecked cables, power cords, software.  Confirmed it's connect to USB port and shows as USB port in the configuration.

Can anyone give me a clue what to do next?

Have you tried to install using the drivers found on the support.dell.com website?  Uninstall any drivers that are currently installed for the 720 on your PC, and then try to install using these:

Hope this helps!  Come back if it doesn't...

PrintBoy,

Sorry this didn't work either.  I was going to buy another Dell printer, but I'm not sure I want to do that now.  I"m very frustrated.  If you have any other suggestions, I would be very glad to hear them.

Just curious, but are other USB devices besides the printer working ok with this PC?  Have you checked  your device manager to make sure that none of the key USB components for the PC itself are banged out (yellow exlamation point over them)?  I expect the printer will have one, but just making sure that nothing else does...

Yes, all the USB ports are working.  I've checked the device manager, nothing is showing in error...not even the printer.

Is this weird or what?

Yes, that's very weird.  So if you go to into the Control Panel, and look at 'Printers and Faxes' do you actually see the 720 printer listed there?  If so, does it have a checkmark on it to set it as the default printer?  Are there mutliple instances of the 720 listed here perhaps?   What happens if you attempt to print a Test Page from here?  If it gives you a specific error message, please post it here.  Thanks for the extra info!

Yes, you see the printer chosen as the default printer at the Control Panel, Printers and Faxes.  I have power to my printer.  I have only one Dell 720 printer on the control panel.  I have another printer, HP laserjet 1200 which is hooked up and runs fine.  I've tried to uninstall the laser off and just use the Dell.  No luck.  Same computer and printer not communicating............

Ditto all of the above.  My organization has 4 Dell J740, all are no longer communicating with the system originally installed to, all just over 1-yr old.  Have contacted Dell, and checked forum suggestions several times, no recommendations have corrected the printer communication problem.

Have had to replace the printers since they are no longer working,  Purchased/installed HP 6540, same usb setup as the Dell, no problem at all w/the HP printers.

Just received a call from a customer [which prompted me to submit to the forum] with a new Dell system and I had installed one of the J740's ...  thought I would try a J740 one more time ... same communication problem between the printer and the system.

There must be a resolution for this.  Please help!
