Dell Printer LUA Bug 1600n / 1815dn
Dell
I work for a large enterprise organization. We have the dell 1600n’s for many of our employees. We will soon be ordering a bunch of the 1815dn printers (the 1600n replacements).
We have found a major issue that has cost us time and money for the enterprise as well as frustration for the users.
Let me explain the issue.
1. We have a “baseline” We setup a machine the way we like it, We install the dell drivers as local admin and give the users limited rights to the machine (power users)
2. We then sysprep and ghost the machine
3. When then lay the image onto hundreds of laptops
4. I then test the image by plugging in the same printer that I connected when building the ghost image, it works perfectly. I then logout of the machine and login as power user, and that same printer works perfectly. Now when a user takes the printer off campus and connects it to a “new” printer of the same model and spec, The XP plug and play detects the printer and tries to reinstall it (no problem yet) About half way into the install it asks for admin credentials to continue the install. This is a major problem as we do not want to give our users administrator to the machine. We have checked group policies, etc and found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326473/en-us.
Our HP printers do not display this same behavior. We do like the dell and do not want to switch from dell to hp but it might not a hard decision if the limited user account bug is not fixed.
We have found that if we rip the core INF files from the install as well as any related drivers (usb, pcl,ps,scanner, etc) and install them with DPinst http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/driver/install/DIFxtls.mspx that the printer no longer requires admin when we switch from printer to printer. This solution works but creates a support nightmare and is not as easy to upgrade as popping in an official dell CD. Also please note that when you look in the help file all it says about admin is:
NOTE: The system administrator should install printer drivers on the network computers.
This is misleading. Admin is required to install, Yes, but also required to plug a second identical printer in the case that the first one breaks.
