v505 Scanner Alignment issue

Hi

I wonder if anybody can provide me with some advice.

I have a Dell v505 AIO printer which has been working fine for over a year, print, scan and copy. I recently had to change the ink cartridges recently and since then I have had a problem with the scanner. Basically every time I turn the printer on it goes through it's normal initiation process, when it gets to the scanner i think it's meant to move the scanning arm all the way from Home (far left of the plate) to the far right and then back again to check for obstructions (I imagine) but my printer only manages to move the arm about 2 inches before it stops. It seems to think it's done it's full pass to the right and then brings the arm back to home but as it's only traveled 2 inches rather than the 12 expected it ends up making a knocking noise for a number of seconds. The same happens every time I try to scan. The arm moves a couple of inches and then starts making the knocking noise. I eventually get an "Unrecoverable Scan Error" on the display. The Printer is fine still.

I think either the calibration is out or there is something in the scan bed which is obstructing the arm. Any ideas how I can recalibrate or open the scan bed to remove any alien items?

Thank you

    ThreeLions,

Not sure if this will work or not.

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error messages the printer is getting. Plug everything back in.

    What happens?

Thanks for the prompt response. Tried that, left the power brick out for 5 minutes but still the same problem at initiation. I think I'm going to have to take it to pieces, but not sure where to start and the manual doesn't give me much information.

    ThreeLions,

Strange that this started to happen after you changed the cartridges.

Did you hear a loud bang?

It is true that when the cartridges were changed, one of the hinges on the back of the printer snapped, hence my theory of debris in the mechanism. But not sure how it could have got in as it is sealed.

It was actually my wife who changed the cartridges so I'm not actually sure what happened, but when I came home from work the top would not close properly and the printer would not work. I had to remove one of the hinges all together and now the printer works again as the top shuts snugly but the scanner has now stopped

Do you think debris from the hinge could have got into the scanner bed?

    ThreeLions,

Since you said about this happening after the cartridges were changed, I was thinking that the encoder strip way have come off for the cartridge carriage.

Post 2 is the fix and post 1 explains what I was thinking.

Cleaning the encoder strip (Loud bang from printer carriage)

So the link shows me how to clean the encoder strip.

I've looked at the encoder strip and it's still attached to the cartridge carriage and I've cleaned it any way. But this has made no difference.

Just to be clear the issue isn't with the cartridge carriage but the scanner arms in the scanner bed. Are the two linked, I don't think so.

    ThreeLions,

Try Restoring the Factory Default settings.
