For some reason when text is highlighted in word 2003 xp and i press backspace, it no longer deletes the text. the delete button still works though. Not crucial to get fixed but annoying, it buged me so much i uninstalled works to try and rectify it, to no avail, after the reinstallation it remembered by previous settings. anyone got any ideas?

Sounds more like a keyboard problem. The backspace key itself has nothing to do with Word settings. Test the keyboard & key with another app like notepad.
Open Word
Click Tools>Options
Click Edit tab
Make sure there's a check in box "Typing replaces selection"
Click OK back to document
And if that doesn't do it, exit Word and do file search for the file normal.dot .
Delete all copies of normal.dot on your hard drive. Word will recreate normal.dot when needed.
Ron, though your message is now two years old, the advice was great! I had the same backspace issue with Word on my work computer, and no one in our IT department could figure it out. Thanks for your help--it did the trick!:smileyhappy:
Ron, you have to move where the jobs are, dear. But don't dispair--Best Buy will always be hiring Qualified IT folk for those who are phone and/or accent-challenged! LOL!
