Dell Datasafe local backup 2.0 and windows 7

I have a studio 1555 laptop two months old, after upgrading my system from Vista to Windows 7, Dell datasafe local back up software stoped working , the program keeps luanching by itself and gives an error mesasage constantly nonstop.

Also I can no longer see the second partition where datasafe stores the backup (D: drive) after upgrading the BIOS from A6 to A7 as it was recommended by dell.

Hi hmvs,

Yes, I will try to finish this job...only  try to avoid to make some stupid mistakes in registry.

 Could you please tell me:

If the Data Safe Local Backup it’s uninstalled  or not working (just in case when something  go wrong)...I’m able to go to restore the computer’s software to original condition(Dell factory..in my case Win Vista)?

Thanks for your time and help.

P.S.If  is possible to restore without DataSafe Local Backup...I will stay without it.

Hi :)

There is only autorun keys...

I believe we can, but i 'am not sure about it...

But you always can use restore points, you can read about it here - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

Btw, if you afraid to do changes in registry, you can download Autoruns: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

And then find and disable two autorun keys:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]

Launcher c:\program files (x86)\dell datasafe local backup\components\scheduler\launcher.exe

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]

DSUpdateLauncher            c:\program files (x86)\dell datasafe local backup\components\dsupdate\runhstart.bat

Hi hmvs,

From the beginning I would like to thank you for your time and help.

To respond you...because last time (when I made changes in registry) I was forced to go back to original factory settings...now..I try to avoid to do it .

Yes...I know about the system restore...not always reliable...is a solution... MORE  IMPORTANT to me is TO RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS.

Today, I have some news...don't have the last error...don't know for how long...looks like is gone..but I have the new one!... is about ... " Softthinks Scheduler...ST (for softthinks) Services...Program files(x86)\Dell DataSafe Local backup\Sft Service" which  is part of Dell Data Safe.

Like me ..there other guys...please read here:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/thread/a533ecc8-6ccb-437c-904c-76bf91a4d47e

Now I'm trying to resolve it (to disable the DataSafe Local Backup.)..not successful until now...the good thing : is only when you restart the PC....so, click and is gone!

Thanks again for your time.

Have a nice day!

Hi all,

I had identical problem.

Just spoke to Dell, - They said pre installed data safe is not compatible with 7.

Best option was to uninstall it, especially if like me you dont need or want to subscribe to it.

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Well...I would like to have this option: Restore to factory settings...DELL FACTORY IMAGE RECOVERY!

(in my case from Win 7 to Win Vista...only just in case something go wrong...I don't have any recovery dvd's...sorry)

Don't believe is possible because..."Restoring Your Dell Computer to Original Factory Installation is with Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0"

Any other solution?

Thanks for your time and help!

Have a nice day!

HELLO EVERYONE,

I wish I had this problem sooner, because I might have had it all figured out by now.

I'm having the same problem as well.  I upgraded my Inspiron 15 from Vista to Windows 7, and my second partition disappeared as well, and I'm receiving that annoying popup.

First of all, preinstalled Data Safe doe not seem to be compatible with Windows 7.  So, what happened to my computer, AND MAYBE YOURS TOO, was that Windows forgot what the drive letter was for the recovery partition.  What I did was go to the command prompt and typed in

diskpart (To enter disk partitioning from the command prompt)

THEN INSIDE THE DISKPART BOX, FROM THE COMMAND PROMPT, I TYPED:

select disk 0 (Main hard drive is usually disk 0)

list part  (To list the partitions)

select part 2 (Partition 2 is the partition where my recovery is)

detail partition  (List the details about the partion to see was I correct).  (I was right).

assign letter=D (Reassigning my recovery partition as letter D).

This reassigned the drive letter back to the recovery partition, and the windows recognized it immediately.

2nd,  the annoying popup message seems to be a startup issue from the windows registry.  I have not corrected this yet, but however, I plays with my registry a bit, so I don't believe this will take me long.

Finally,

THIS MAY OR MAY NOT TOTALLY BE TRUE, BUT BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE:

If step one works, and /or your recovery partition is visible,  It seems that as long as the active partition is not deleted, that recovery partition is actually bootable; at least mine is.  To give a brief description without writing another book, what you need is,

Some type of software (floppy disk or partitioning software) in order to set that recovery partition to the active partition. (ACTUALLY THE DISKPART COMMAND PROMPT CAN BE USED FOR THIS).  Once you do that, you should be able to boot directly into the DATASAFE local environment upon reboot.  From there, you might be able to performed an emergency backup to recover all of your lost files and return your computer to its factory state.  Then you may or may not need that floppy disk or partitioning software to reset your operating system's partition to active. (I HAVE NOT TESTED THE PART AFTER THE REBOOT YET IN DETAIL.  I MOVED ALL OF MY BACKUPS TO AN EXTENAL HARD DRIVE BEFORE UPGRADING, SO I'M SAFE).

I hope at least some of this makes sense to any of the real brainiacs out there, and I would like to know if anyone has done something simular to what I have described above, and are there some better solutions out there, because, there probably is.

40 minutes with Tech Support..... Uninstall Dell DataSafe and either use their Free online 2G storage version or buy an external hard drive (my choice) because as of now Dell DataSafe & Windows 7 don't play.

Hi shortydogg,

About the missing partition... please notice in the page 1 what  sheflix  write:"Per your second issue regarding the recovery partition, that is simply a Windows 7 deal.  I believe you will still see it if you type manage in your start search box, select computer management top of window, Storage, then Disk Management."... all of us will find or see the partition.

You said something interesting:"as long as the active partition is not deleted, that recovery partition is actually bootable"...please need more info.

Because is the Dell error ...will be nice from the part of Dell to came ASAP with a solution for the actual clients or future clients...

Win7 ...Dell told us it will be better :emotion-5:...

I would like to know if the Dell with Win7 directly installed from the factory have the DataSafe issue...???...Why? Because If you check about `Win7 Emerging Issues/Fix an issue with Win7`... from the Dell site...looks there are NO ISSUE with DataSafe Local Backup :emotion-2:...please verify and see if I`m wrong....

Have a nice day !

I had the exact same question! Why does it appear if Window 7 came with the Dell it works but not if you upgraded, doesn't make any sense to me?? I would hope Dell is trying to create a patch for this but they told me to uninstall and either their online version-- ya right, or external device which is irritating.

Even if the backup works it will bring you back to Vista not Windows 7.

Yes I am having the same problems as everyone else. No Datasafe local backup and lost original programing. When I installed windows 7 I did an upgrade I originally had Windows Vista Ult 64, I do have the disks that came with the computer. Can you tell me do they put the system back to original and will it bring back the ability to use datasafe? I just dont want to take the chance to lose anything else and I need the answer simple. (HA) I'm really old enough to know better nothing is simple just be kind.

No timid dragon, sorry,

The disks that came with your computer will not restore your DataSafe, and they will probably not bring back your computer's factory state.  They will just install a fresh copy of windows, along with your drivers and applications.

I had Vista Home Premium, and just upgraded to Windows 7 (Home Premium).  I'm having the same issues as everyone else, too.

My recovery partition was still on the computer but was not being recognized by Windows Explorer, until I reassigned its drive letter from the command prompt, which I described on yesterday's post.

I just reinstalled my factory state for Vista.  I used a MS Dos boot floppy disk so that I could change the active (boot) partition to the recovery one.  Once I did that, it booted straight up, as if it was a CD.  From there I was able to do an emergency backup of my files, (Well some trial file just to see what would happen), and then returned the system back to its factory state.

The good news is that there does exit ways to recover your files and return your computer back to its origional factory state.

The bad news is that once it is back, you can only use it to back up and recover your files, at least so far.  The abilily to system save, recover files from system saves, and your ability to create your recovery disks seems to be gone for now, if not forever.

I would have posted this sooner, however; I've been doing other things as well as this all day.  Does anyone else have some more useful information that can help us all out?   Let us know soon.

To make things even simpler

People who have upgraded to Win 7 can revert back to Win vista easily only if you have the recovery partition untouched.

Here is how you can do that-

1. Backup all the data needed in ur Win 7 (If needed)

2. Right click 'COMPUTER' from ur desktop and goto MANAGE

3. In MANAGE console goto STORAGE and then to DISK MANAGEMENT

4. In DISK MANAGEMENT you can see the recovery partition. RIGHT Click on the RECOVERY PARTITION and Asign a drive letter.

5. After that RIGHT CLICK again on the RECOVERY PARTITION and click on MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE

6. REBOOT and you can boot to the recovery console and restore Win Vista
