microsoft update keeps trying to update my microsoft works 8.0 that came preinstalled on my e1505. i do not have the works disks. but the update ASKS for the MS Works disc and will not install the update without it. it keeps popping up on automatic updates, but i can do nothing. since i am out of warranty, there is not way to contact dell except for fee based service. any solutions?
Dell won"t send you the disk without charging you. I sent then an email at the above link. They sent disks for everything in my system except works. I don't know how to get the reminder off that I have updates to install.
microsoft [and windows] update search your machine, to determine the particular updates you need. if you uninstall the program, it won't be found any more, and so, you should not be offered any future updates [for something that's no longer there].
just be absolutely sure you won't ever want to use Works again....
yes! thank you. it worked perfectly. dell, by the way, says that Works was "complimentary" -
"As I see from the records that you did not order and paid for the software at the time of system purchase. So it was just a complimentary software provided to you at that time. Now for the full version you need to purchase it. You may purchase it from Dell sales. They can be reached at 1-800-915-3355."
This IS the full version, by the way. anyone remember when Dell used to be known for service?
Glad that worked. I was also told Works was complimentary, but it does appear to be the full version. It did come with Trial Office software, which I uninstalled. I think Dell should support it - at least we should be able to get security updates. I hope the next update doesn't ask for the CD.
hi i downloaded that cab file that was listed in the thread here from microsoft website for the msworks 8 update problem. when i had my laptop delivered to me i didnt have msworks 8 on it i got my laptop last november 2007. when i install the download to my desktop it says 1305 file does not exist i am trying to fix this because update keeps comming up and i keep gettn the error from the en_us.cab file. is there anything i can do to remove this update since ms8 was never installed nor did it come with the laptop
Are you saying that Microsoft Update is trying to install the Works update, and asking for the disk, even though your laptop doesn't have works? Did you verify that Works isn't listed via Control Panel->Programs and Features?
Keep in mind that you may have works 8.5. That is what I have, though some places it just says Works 8.
If you DO have works, your choices are to uninstall works, or use the procedure I posted. If you don't have works, I don't know what to tell you.
If you do need to install the cab file, first download it, Then, using explorer, right click on the file and select explore. You should then see the .msp file in the .cab "folder". Right click the .msp file and select extract. Double click on the extracted file you may get a UAC prompt. After that, I didn't get anything more, but the next time I did a windows update, I didn't get the prompt for the works cd.

no guarantee, but try ordering a disk from DELL here:
