Service Packs and .NET Frameworks

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Microsoft Windows XP. It has been running very slow and I was just wondering if I need ALL of these items on my computer.

1. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
2. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
3. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Sevice Pack 2
4. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
5. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
6. Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP
7. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
8. MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430)
9. Windows XP Service Pack 3

No... you don't need all those.

XP SP3, plus .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 are all you need :emotion-5:

I assume that you have the basic items already installed, as otherwise they would not have come up in the updates screen.  All of them are primarily security updates that correct various mistakes in the orginal code so that hackers and virus writers cannot make use of them to gain control of your computer.  Although some of them are large, they really don't expand the existing application by much since they are replacing code for the most part rather than adding it.

I realize installing them is a pain, but closing the security holes helps everyone by removing one more potential infected computer from the internet.  The only one I would be cautious about is Windows XP SP-3.  Most users get this installed with no trouble, and it works fine.  It does change a few things, though, and if you have many older applications you can occasionally run into trouble.  Before performing the update you should read through Microsoft's advice on preparing for it, found here:  Win XP SP-3 Update Pre-requisites.
