BIOS update failing for C6420

When trying to update the firmware on the C6420, I was able to update the iDRAC from 3.30.30.30 to 5.00.10.20 successfully. However, after that, I have been unable to update the BIOS from 1.4.5 to any other version. I am trying to update to version 2.12.2, but every time I attempt to update it fails during the Downloading stage in the Job Queue. I even tried to update to 1.4.9, and that failed.

Any help?

Ben.Wallace,

The issue is likely due to you updating out of order, as well as too large of a gap between the bios and idrac. With the system updates it should go bios, then idrac, then raid, then remainder of server. If behind you would go BIOS, iDrac, BIOS, iDrac, etc up to current, never getting the BIOS and iDrac more than an update or so beyond each other.

What you may try is back flashing the idrac to a similar date as when 1.4.5 released, then try walking both back up to current together.

Also, just to confirm what you were seeing, what is the specific error you see when trying to run the update?

Let me know if this helps.

I was able to figure out why it was failing initially and got that resolved. However, now I have a new problem. This time, I am able to get the BIOS update to the scheduled stage, but it never progresses and never installs. I rolled back the iDRAC to an earlier version, but that did not allow it to progress, either. As reference, the current iDRAC version is 3.18.18.18, and the BIOS is 1.4.5. I am trying to get the iDRAC to 5.10.00.00 and the BIOS to 2.12.2.

If you haven't already, you ight try performing a power drain or clearing NVRAM. I've seen both of these help with some odd issues. However, be advised that if you do clear NVRAM, it will reset the BIOS to default values. So, if you have any setting changes, you may want to note those, first.

While updating BIOS did you selected Apply Now option or a schedule option? Can you reboot your server and check whether BIOS update is getting initiated during boot
