Dell PowerEdge R320 - Dell Chelsio T520-CR

I have a PowerEdge r320 at home that I use for studying and testing. I have gotten a Chelsio T520-CR to have fiber connections to other devices.

But apparently the r320 "freezes" when starting the firmware:

Initializing firmware interfaces...
Initialization complete.

It is not able to continue with the process, when removing the Chelsio T520-CR the server starts as expected, without any problem.

When I have the chelsio card connected I have the option to enter its Bios, well I have the following messages:

Chelsio Unified Boot BIOS v1.0.0.90
Chelsio Storage FCoE Bios is Disabled or Boot Ports are all set to NONE
Please run Chelsio Unified Configuration Utility
Chelsio Storage iSCSI Bios is Disabled or Boot Ports are all set to NONE
Please run Chelsio Unified Configuration Utility

Apparently I have some warnings, but I don't know if they are related to the initialization failure.

After this, the dell r320 does a characterization process for the chelsio card, at the end it restarts automatically, and I find myself with the problem described above.

Is it a compatibility problem? Of configuration? I don't really know how to solve this problem.

Thanks.

Edit: PowerEdge R320 Bios ver: 1.2.4

This looks like a compatibility issue. Can you share the part number of Chelsio T520-CR card. Is it from Dell?

You can try after installing latest BIOS and iDRAC FW on the server

The one and only Chelsio i ever have seen in a dell device was one within a Compellent(SC)

But on paper there was Chelsio S310 or so which looks like a NIC which was available for Poweredge a long time ago.

The reference is: MY-0HTTG1-76001-9BM-0001-A00

I think I found a more current BIOS version, I'll try to update.

Thanks.

Wow, that's bad news, if the Bios and idrac updates don't work, how can I check which devices are compatible with my Chelsio?

Is there no reference on compatibility?

On the other hand, could the chelsio card work on a conventional computer?

Thanks.

There was once a Dell Chelsio S320 where you can download the driver from dell.com  and it looks like there was also a T520-CR. But when searching for a Dell T520-CR  nothing comes back.

I am trying to update the Bios and idrac. I managed to update the bios to the most recent version 2.9.0

But I am unable to update idrac, it is at version 1.23.23.

With F11 I enter LIFECYCLE CONTROLLER and from there I go to the Firmware Update section, I select LocalDrive since I have it on a USB.

You can see how it detects my USB, but it does not detect any catalog, how am I supposed to update the idrac?

I have many formats, "exe, sign, EXE, BIN" but what is that catalog?

What would be the method to update idrac from usb as I did with the BIOS?

I hope that this solves the problem, on the other hand I was able to see the idrac log, here I report the error that I have when I connect the chelsio card.

Message ID: PCI320 Description: A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 28 function 0

Message ID: PCI320 Description: A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 10 function 0

Thanks.

I think I understand you, I'm in the Firmware update section of LIFECYCLE CONTROLLER.

I can see the Versions currently installed, such as the BIOS, the two Broadcom ethernet adapters, System CPLD etc...

Do you mean that I would have to have a driver installed in that section to be able to use my Chelsio T520-CR?

Then it will be of little use to update the Bios and the idrac, I will try, at the moment I have not been able to.

Thanks.

You should boot without the NIC and than update your Server FW to the latest. If you assign a IP to the LCC it will fetch all needed FW and apply them. If you do it manually you need the *.exe.

About the Chelsio NIC... i have my doubt about the compatibility within a PowerEdge Server. In all the years i have never seen a Chelsio when configuring a Server. There is Intel,Broadcom, Qlogic, Fastlink but i cant remember about Chelsio listet there. On the other hand the 12Gen server are old now and my brain lacks

Even when this is a Chelsio from Dell it might coming from a Dell Compellent(SC) because they use Chelsio T5xx there.

To see if the NIC works in general you should try it within a normal PC which are often more compatible.

I found an HP ProLiant ML110 G5to do the test , I think it might work.

It has PCI-E x8 for my chelsio, these are the specs, and the mainboard:

MainBoard

What do you think? The board looks more "Generic" could it work with the Chelsio T520-CR?

Thanks.

Apparently, according to this paper by Chelsio, my NIC is only compatible for the following models:

Chelsio paper

Dell T5600
DELL PowerEdge 2950
DELL PowerEdge T110
DELL PowerEdge T710
DELL PowerEdge R220
DELL PowerEdge R720
IBM X3650 M2
IBM X3650 M4*
HP Proliant DL180 gen9
HP ProLiant DL385G2
Supermicro X7DWE
Supermicro X8DTE-F
Supermicro X8STE
Supermicro X8DT6
Supermicro X9SRL-F
Supermicro X9SRE-3F
Supermicro-X10DRi
ASUS P5KPL
ASUS P8Z68
Lenovo X3650 M5
Intel DQ57TM

But as said above, how is it possible to search for Chelsio drivers on a PowerEdge r220 and find nothing?

So there is no solution then? do I have to use one of the listed servers?

Thanks.
