Dell Poweredge R620 - Can't update LC, Bios, or Install OS
Hello!
I'm an aspiring Linux and Network Administrator but I am having a heck of a time getting my PE-R620 to run anything. Any help is much appreciated!
1. No OS will install correctly using the OS Deployment: OS deployment says it supports RHEL 6.2, 5.8. Neither of these will install and get hung up after install process starts. Windows 2008 server crashes during installation, or has a missing driver file; variable issues when I do the exact same installation.
2. Bios and LC will not recognize the update files: Since I cannot put an OS on, I'm trying to update the LC and Firmware from the IDRAC. Is it not the .BIN files I need to use? All the research I've done points to using the .exe files, except I cannot get a working OS on here in which to open them! I realize my IDRAC version is still 1.20, so I even tried getting the 1.23 version but I get the same RAC error....

iDRAC does not support .BIN files for update. We need to use .EXE file. As you have very old iDRAC FW installed on the server, you need to first update iDRAC 1.50 or above version where iDRAC support updating using .EXE file. To update to 1.50.50 version you need to use firmimg.d7 file. You can download the same from below location for 1.57.57. You need to download "iDRAC7__1.57.57__A00.exe" file from below location and extract it to get firmimg.d7 file

As you have very old iDRAC FW, I would recommend to perform staged update instead of directly updating from very old FW to latest. I would suggest to choose one FW from each year based on release date and perform staged update. On below link you can expand Version tab to get list of iDRAC FW supported.

Once your iDRAC is updated to 1.50 and above you can download .EXE file (File Format Update Package for MS Windows) for various component from support site and upload it to iDRAC to perform update. Please refer below link for details

It should be noted that my other issue about not being able to install an OS was linked to using the wrong ram chips. I pulled them all out except the one in slot A1 and was able to install windows 2008 server in order to update the IDRAC. So anyone coming reviewing this post with a similar problem should take note.
When in doubt, follow the destructions...

Thank you, this worked. I ended up getting Windows 2008 Server installed and updating year by year with the .exe files, so a slightly different, maybe less efficient method you described, but nevertheless it did require updating year by year.
