PowerEdge R310 Memory Upgrade Nightmare

Hi everyone,

Last week I got a R310 from a friend of mine with no CPU and memory.
Therefore I ordered an Intel Xeon X3470 and 2x PC3-10600R 8GB modules to get it up and running.
However, today, when putting everything in the system, it did not work, and I found that this is not a supported memory configuration.

I therefore tried to change the memory modules for 4x PC3-10600R 4GB (2Rx4) modules.
However, when booting the server, the situation did not change: it will not POST, and on the diagnostic panel, LEDs 1 and 4 are on.
This struck me as weird, since the hardware owners manual suggests this is a supported configuration:

RDIMM

I am hoping that someone here can help me to find out what is going on.

Some things I have tried:

  • Upgrading the bios to the latest version (1.14.0)
  • The CPU and server work: I can boot the system with 4x PC3-10600E 1GB modules
  • The memory works: I can boot my other server with this memory in it

I appreciate any help in advance,

Best,

Olivier

Hi,

I'm unsure if the memory are enterprise memories, or the same branding that you're now having. Could get some good picture of the memory that you are trying.

Have you tried only 1 memory in slot A1 and 1 CPU?

Do you have any other components installed in the server?

Could you try just these component and turn on:

  • System board
  • Processor with heatsink for prevention of over-heating
  • Power supply unit (PSU) (and for redundant PSU also the PDB)
  • Riser installed
  • Front panel (to power system ON)
  • Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1.

Hi Joey,

First of all, thank you for your response!

First of all, I have just tried the configuration you suggested with 1 memory module (and 1 cpu since the r310 only has the option for one).

This also doesnt work (now only the 1st LED is on on the front panel), however, I also would not expect this configuration to work by the above table, since in this case the memory should be 4R instead of 2R. (Or I am misreading the table somehow, in which case, please let me know)

Therefore, I have also just tried 2 modules (slots 1, 2) since that should be a supported configuration for 2R modules by the above table. This, however will again give the same issue but again with LEDs 1 and 4 on the front panel.

The memory modules are hynix modules of type HMT151R7TFR4C, please find attached the image below:

o.smet,

The issue you are seeing is based on compatibility. The hynix dimms you referenced are indeed dual rank dimms (2rx4), but with 4 banks not 8 (2rx8), which are required in the R310. The higher the number of banks, the fewer the chips in the memory module, the better the reliability and power consumption. The R310 currently doesn't support any 2rx4 dimms, regardless of speed or size.

Hope this helps clarify things.
