Poweredge R730xd BIOS Update - Dell update package components has stopped working
Hello,
I have four Dell PowerEdge R730xd servers running Windows Server 2016 Standard, that run our Hyper-V cluster. When attempting to update to the latest firmware (2.12.1) using the BIOS_9FG85_WN64_2.12.1_01.exe file from the Dell support site, the application crashes. It makes it as far as the prompt to verify installed vs package version. When clicking Yes, it attempts to update for about 2 seconds, then the update application crashes.
Dell Update Package components has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
After closing the crash window, the application states: "The update failed to complete; you must restart your system and try again."
Any ideas how to get past this, or update from command line or possible racadm?

iDRAC GUI doesn't seem to give me any of those options for some reason.
I was able to successfully resolve this by searching the error related to the update.xml file. Turns out, you can't update the BIOS without enabling the LifeCycle Controller. Since I'm off-site unless something bad happens, remote management is the only feasible way of managing these servers.
I opened a cmd prompt and browsed to C:\Program Files\Dell\SysMgt\OM_iDRACTools\racadm and ran the following commands to disable and enable the LCC:
$ racadm set LifecycleController.LCAttributes.LifecycleControllerState 0
$ racadm set LifecycleController.LCAttributes.LifecycleControllerState 1
Note that I did not need to reboot after running the commands to get the BIOS to update. The update utility really should specify that you need LCC enabled in order to update the BIOS.

Hi,
May I know how far behind the BIOS version? Have you update iDRAC/LCC before BIOS update? Could you verify the download installer has been downloaded completely by checking it's checksum value: https://dell.to/3e3Qg42

Hi Joey,
Thanks for the reply. The BIOS is currently at 2.9.1, two revisions ago from what I can tell. I also tried 2.10.5, with the same error. iDRAC is at 2.75.100.75, I'm not sure how to tell what version of LCC I'm on? Checksum SHA1 was verified and matches perfectly.
In the Event Viewer, I get the following error:
The description for Event ID 1 from source Update Package: BIOS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Exit code = 1 (Failure)

It would seem the error in the log when it crashes is: Error finding file: update.xml

try running it from the idrac gui. Open Idrac gui, and on the left side tree, go to IDRAC settings>Update and Rollback, then choose the bios file, and click upload. After it uploads, tick the check box on the left, which will activate the "Install" and "Install Next reboot" buttons. if you click Install, the system WILL reboot.

Thanks for the info. Thats very interesting, I would never have thought the LC would be disabled, as its enabled by default from the factory. I'll have to keep that in my head for future tshooting that the customer may have disabled LC.

Ah the joys of entering an environment that other sysadmins set up. Not sure why the previous admin disabled LCC.
I should also note that disabling LCC doesn't seem to be necessary before enabling it. You should be able to just run "racadm set LifecycleController.LCAttributes.LifecycleControllerState 1" and proceed with the BIOS update.
