R660 TPM 7.2.4.1 Update Failed

I'm attempting to upgrade the R660 TPM firmware from 7.2.3.1 to 7.2.4.1 via the openmanage vmware lifecycle manager. However, it's showing the update Failed in iDRAC. Is anyone else seeing this TPM 7.2.4.1 firmware update fail? Is there a way to see why it failed?

I found the following error message in the Lifecycle log:

SUP0517 Unable to update the Nuvoton TPM 2.0 firmware to version 7.2.4.1 because the operation is not supported or the device is in a locked state or the device is not present in the target system.
Log Sequence Number:
37142
Detailed Description:
The firmware image specified in the operation did not apply successfully. An internal error may have occurred because the operation may not be supported, or the device is not present in the target system or disabled for performing the update. For BOSS controller, the device may be in a locked state.
Recommended Action:
1) Identify and download the latest firmware version that corresponds to the component being updated in the target system inventory, and retry the operation. For a list of supported firmware versions, refer to the iDRAC User's Guide available on the support site. 2) Enable the CSIOR if disabled, reboot the host, complete the CSIOR operation and retry the operation. Refer the iDRAC/ LC User's Guide available on the support site for procedure to enable the CSIOR. 3) Enable the component if disabled, and retry the operation. 4) Add the component if not present in the target system, complete the CSIOR operation and retry the operation.

Exactly the same problem here using the OME appliance. Updated it this morning to 4.6 but the issue remains. Tried several different R660s too.

Glad to hear I'm not alone. I suspect the issue is with the update itself, not OME. I may try to contact Dell support if I'm able to collect the TSR from iDRAC.

Hello,

There seems to be a problem with the catalog.

I will report this to the Systems Management team.

For now you can download the TPM update for your server. There should be two of them. If one fails try the other one.

R660

https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/poweredge-r660/drivers

Select Security, it should have two entries.

Download both and apply. One of them should work.

Hello,

Unfortunately, neither of the TPM updates works.

One of the updates ends with an error during execution, and the other immediately reports that it is not applicable for this system.

We have tested this on multiple servers:

  • PowerEdge R660

  • PowerEdge R650xs

  • PowerEdge R450

In all cases, the TPM update could not be applied.

Recommended Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Pre-Update Checks:

      • Verify TPM Status:
        • Enter BIOS (F2 at boot) → System Security → Confirm TPM is:
          • Enabled
          • In Ready state (not Locked or Owned)
        • Clear TPM if owned: BIOS → System Security → TPM 2.0 Security → Clear TPM
      • Check CSIOR Status:
        • In iDRAC: iDRAC Settings → System Settings → CSIOR → Enable
          (Required for firmware updates)
      • Physical Verification:
        • Ensure TPM module is properly seated (requires physical access)

2. Update Procedure Adjustments:

      • Use Direct iDRAC Update (Bypass VMware LCM):
        • Download TPM 7.2.4.1 from Dell Support
        • In iDRAC: Maintenance → System Update → Manual Update
          (Upload the .EXE/.BIN file directly)
      • Alternative Methods:
        • Update via DSU (Dell System Update):
          dsu --apply --update-file=<TPM_7.2.4.1_file>.exe

        • Use Bootable ISO created with Dell Repository Manager

3. If TPM Remains Stubborn:

      • Force Clear TPM Ownership:
        1. In OS: Run tpm.msc → Clear TPM
          (Caution: Destroys encryption keys!)
        2. Linux: tpm2_clear -c p
      • BIOS Reset:
        • BIOS → System Maintenance → Restore Settings
      • iDRAC Hard Reset:
        • iDRAC: Maintenance → iDRAC Reset → Reset iDRAC

4. Known Dell-Specific Workarounds:

      • Some users report success by:
        1. Reverting to TPM 7.2.3.1
        2. Updating iDRAC/BIOS to latest
        3. Retrying 7.2.4.1 update
      • Check for BIOS dependencies:
TPM 7.2.4.1 may require BIOS ≥ 2.8.0 (verify in Release Notes)

5. Escalation Path:

    • Collect Debug Data:
      • iDRAC: Support → Logs → Export Lifecycle Logs
      • Include /var/log/syslog (Linux) or System Event Log (Windows)

6. Wait for updates from System Management team
