R720 drive status light not working
Hi,
I have a Dell Poweredge R720, configured with 8 x 3.5" bays at the front. One of the bays has a bad status light (the top light) but the activity light works (the bottom one). I tried swapping out the caddie for this bay and the light still did not work, so it's the backplane and not the caddie.
My questions are:
- Is there any chance of manually fixing this light on the backplane?
- Is this a common problem?
- Is it likely that only the light is the issue (i.e. this is not an indicator of a bigger problem)?
I have no idea how the lights are wired but if it's simple, I can try fixing it. I'm also willing to ignore the bad light, if nothing else is wrong. I could also replace the backplane but that seems like a hassle, for one light.

I've not ever seen just an LED fail on our servers. I'm sure it's perfectly possible, but not something I've seen. If you have some advanced soldering skills, I'm sure you could make a repair at the component level, but anything we could offer would be a complete part.
As for whether there are other issues, I can't really speculate. If you're worried about it, exporting a SupportAssist collection and RAID log would reveal a lot.

Columns 1-3 (going left-to-right) are in a RAID (six drives). I took this picture while the RAID was active, so you can see the activity light everywhere except drive 6 (the bottom of column 3). Its status light never goes on.
I don't know what circuits are involved in this light and if it might indicate any other problems. I don't see any problems in OpenManage. I can try to collect logs/data, if that is helpful.

Hi Morgan,
The LED's are fabricated on the backplane itself, There could be two reason for it.
1. Carbon or Any obstacle is blocking the Light to coming out from the LED to Carrier. That you have to check by removing the backplane and clean it.
2. The LED itself gone bad. For the same backplane replacement is only the solution.
It's just physical disk status indicator, if there is no error in Logs/Monitoring, it will not be harmful for your system.

Okay. Thank you! I'll have to see if I can figure out where the logs are and what to look for.
