RAM Speed with Processor version

Hello,

I'm going to get a new Server PowerEdge T130, and I have two versions of Processors to choose from.

Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5

Intel Xeon E3-1220 v6

Now I know that I should use DDR4-2133 with v5 processor and use DDR4-2400 with v6 processor.

My question is What happens if I used 2133 with v6 and used 2400 with v5, will they work and if yes what is the downside to that configuration?

Sameh

Sameh Elhussainy,

I am not seeing the requirement that you are stating. It appears both dimms are supported on both processors. So I only see the slight reduction in speeds as the downside.

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for the information. From Intel website, it seems that memory types DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V for Processor E3-1220 v5.

Now my question is how DDR4-2400 is going to work with this processor? Will the DIMM down clock itself to deal with the processor clock speed?

-------

The same thing for Processor E3-1220 v6, memory types: DDR4-2400, DDR3L-1866

Again how is this processor work with lower RAM speed as DDR4-2133, will the processor down clock itself to deal with this DIMM?

-------

I am so sorry, but this is so confusing to me. I hope you can help me with this.

Regards,

Sameh

If the speed isn’t supported it should downclock to the 2133.
