540 Printer cartridge says 0 prints left - should be 24!

I put in a new cartridge and printed 16 photos. I should be able to print 24 more, but the error message says that only 0 of 40 prints are left. I have tried removing and reinserting the cartridge, both with printer on & off. The manual just says to throw away the cartridge
