EMC Smarts for Receipt of SNMP Messages

Can EMC Smarts receive SNMP INFORM notifications?  If so, does EMC Smarts acknowledge receipt of the INFORM?

I've searching all over and have not found any info to even suggest the answer to this one way or another, thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi Sean,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Currently Smarts does not support informs on SNMP v2 only SNMP v3.

I hope this answers your question.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you,

Kolter

Hello,

My name is Kolter Kunz from the SMARTS support team.

If you are referring to SNMPv3 Informs, Smarts Trap Adapter does support snmp v3 informs.

Informs are traps that require an acknowlegdement.

The Smarts Trap Adapter does support snmp v3 informs however, only the active trap adapter can handle snmp v3 informs.

Basically the TA is responsible for processing informs and sending back the acknowledgement in the same flow as traps.

To process SNMPv3 Informs, an EngineID needs to be specified when starting Smarts Trap Adapter (TA).
This can be random as it is the local SNMPv3 Engine ID used when communicating with the device sending the SNMPv3 Informs.

The only thing we need to ensure is that while starting the sm_trapd, it has the following option to receive the informs at the client side.

sm_trapd ... --localengine= ....

--localengine=   Local engine ID, for receiving SNMPv3 informs

Example:

./sm_trapd --config=icoi -s INCHARGE-OI -n trapd -p 162 --localengine=800000020109840301 -M sm_actions --traceSNMP --errlevel=debug
--daemon --output --rules=icoi-trapd/trap_mgr_parse.asl

Please let us know if this is helpful and if you have any further questions.

Thank you,

Kolter

Thanks,

I should have included this in my original query, my question is in regards to SNMP v2c.  Can Smarts acknowledge informs for SNMP v2c?

Sean
