Kind of a quick question with EmailXtender (without User Cache):
If a user is disconnected from the network and therefore has no access to the Exchange server, what archived messages can he still access:
a. the old archived messages before he disconnected, or
b. all archived messages (before and after he disconnected)
and what error message will be sent to the outlook client if archived messages cannot be retrieved?
Archived messages can be accessed online or offline because a copy of the message still lives in his mailbox.
Shortcutted messages are a different story. While offline a user will get the following message when activating a shortcut:
The message selected is archived &shortcutted, and cannot currently be retrieved. (Shortcuts are not available when Outlook is offline.) If using cache mode, please synchronize your mailbox
Frank is correct. You will get the generic (outlook is offline) shortcut error when attempting to resolve offline.
When shortcutting a message, the message is removed from the Exchange server, and a stub/pointer file is placed there instead.
When you click on a shortcutted message, we restore the message back to the Exchange Server. If we are not connected to the Network, we will be unable to perform this.
Archived effectively means copied. A message is archived when you capture it during journaling or through an Archive task using EmailXtract. A copy is placed on the EmailXtender server. The message also resides on the mail server.
A shortcut task replaces the message on the mail server with a pointer to the archived message.
Archived messages are mail items that have been ingested by emailxtender and resides in the archive. This happens if real-time journaling is enabled, and/or when you run an Extract task (Archive/Shortcut).
A Shortcut task (via Extract) archives the mail first, and then shortcuts the message.
Essentially, an EX shortcut is an archived mail that has been moved from the exchange server, and resides on the EX server until it is restored.
In Frank's response, I am getting the impression that archived messages and shortcutted messages are not the same. If that is so, could you explain the difference bewteen them.
