How does EX handle duplicate messages

The environment is Lotus Domino 8.0, EX version 4.81.409, Windows 2003 SP2 server with SQL 2000 SP4 service Pack.

I archived a mailbox and found in the summary Duplicates:58. The summary indicated that 60 messages have not been archived. On going into details of logs, I realized 58 are duplicates i.e. first archived and then skipping (archived) which seems OK & 2 have the erro "Unable to create ONM files".

For ONM file issue, I am opening a support case but what about duplicate messages, EX does not archive them or create pointers therefore when I recovered using EX plugin, I got 60 less messages recovered.

What explains this behaviour of not archiving/recovering duplicate messages & how would a shortcut task work with these messages?

Hi Anuj,

More details can only be discussed after looking at the environment but in short if messages are already tagged with properties and message ID then EX to my understaning will just pass by assuming that it has already been archived.

EmailXtract jobs on the fly creates message id and pushes it to SQL is SQL will say I already have this message then it will not archive this message again due to deduplication feature of product.

In certain cases where there was an AV software configured wrongly or there has bee some other issue on EX server where messages went missing after going to MSGCENTER then that will cause trouble for you and you really need to fix the issue what was causing messages from being lost or deleted. A very common reason is AV software not configured properly. Even though some times we add exclussions in AV software and assumes that AV will honor those, its not always the case I have seen though filemon on time to time that AV still touches the directorioes which were added as exclussions.

Hope this helps.

Since you are opening tickey with EMC Support they might be able to help you there.

Regards,
Rajan

It is appreciated if EX gives the same MsgID to SQL and does not archive this due to dedpulication feature. It helps space and processing but it should be creating some pointers so that if you want to restore the entire nsf file, you can see all your mails back.

Duplicate messages should not be lost. If EX will lose duplicate messages, then I think it would more of an RFE case than Support but if this is happening wrongly then I would like to take Support into loop.
