RestoreShortcutByEID - Opening Msg by EID Failed.

Using one EX 4.81 SP1 build 409 server with Exchange 2003 SP2. Have a user base of 2,500 mailboxes and just over 1 million shortcut messages.

The OTG Windows Event Log is registering between 30 to 50 events a day similar to the following:

Source : CProcessMailbox
Routine : RestoreShortcutByEID
Description: Opening Msg by EID Failed. Msg ID is '000000009915B1D3882F24419158E988A00AB3AD07002FF47E0FFF0A3D44B632FE252C821AD60000006FA4E200002FF47E0FFF0A3D44B632FE252C821AD60000006FA90B0000'
HR : MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND

We shortcut the users mailboxes over a month ago and have literally only had 5 calls to the help desk from users saying they can't resolve shortcuts.

I don't understand why these events keep showing up. Are the shortcuts not resolving and users are just not telling us? Is this a problem I should care about? It also emails my mailbox when the alerts come in, I want to either fix it or block this particular type of notification if it's not important.

Hi Mitchell,

This is a usual message which you can see in many environments, that could be present there when EX was not able to pull back shortcut within a particular time frame and EX might have thrown error even though end user might not have encountered any issue. But we cannot rule out messages which went to BadDir directories and the ones which was corrupt.

Users who reported that they cannot open shortcuts you might want to check with them that they cannot open certain shortcuts or none at all, if its none then problem is with shortcut add-in installed or not installed which is needed by outlook to resolve shortcuts.

If its only certain messages, try to search for those messages either in user search or admin search and see if you could open those or not, certain messages could be corrupt and could not be opened, if you cannot open those I am sure you cannot resolve those.

Still if you find something that does not make sence then support is always the way to go for. Support engineer should be able to help you in any of the above scenarios.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
Rajan
