S1 install to replace EX

I've gone over the S1 install documents and am waiting for my activation codes.  Is this something that I should attempt on my own or outsource for someone else to perform?  I generally prefer outside assistance for "new" product installs but it looks fairly straightforward.  Has anyone out there gone through this themselves?  I understand that the vault migration into S1 (no I don't want to maintain my EX environment forever) is a pay-for service but paying for an S1 install AND the vault migration is an expensive proposition.

Hi Dan,

Speaking from the side of one who does S1 Implementations, I would recommend outsourcing it to someone who knows the product well.

It's not that it complicated but it's a lot of individual pieces that if not done correctly or missed will be a headache later to find and fix.

If you have time to read through all the manuals to be sure you have everything covered and understand the architecture and feature well enough to do your own design, then you could do it yourself.

The Archive migration will have to be outsourced to a EMC Partner that has been validated to do the migration once the tool is available to them.

How large is the archive you need to migrate?

I have about 550GB of EX containers.  Based on the growth rate I have about 18 months to 2 years worth of space available so I'm not in a dire position.  I'm planning on puting the S1 containers on my Celerra and have plenty of space there.  I have a single Exchange 2003 cluster.  EX is actually holding me up on my Exchange 2010 implementation.  If I can get S1 up and going with the old vault connected, I can move forward with that and get someone to come in to migrate the data later.

I have read a good deal and I have actually found that the DR planning guide to be the most thorough in describing the components involved.  I'm in a smaller market so local availability of partners is very limited... We don't plan on doing UDA - just envelope journaling which is why it seems to be pretty straightforward.  The problem I have had with EMC PS is that their "canned" engagements don't seem to cover a start-to-finish implementation (install S1, connect EX, shortcut updates, then vault migration).  Perhaps I need to reach out further to the partner community.

Right now everything aside from the database is on a single server for EX under ESXi 4.0.  I'm not aware of any performance-related problems or complaints.  Since the cost for the installation and the vault migration is so high, I'm being pushed to look at alternative software even though we've never had any problems or complaints with EX.  Moving the vaults into S1 can *ONLY* be done by a partner or EMC so that cost is inevitable - I'm just trying to see if it makes sense to spend another 10k to "upgrade" to S1, do it myself, or look at something else.  It's just tough to swallow that the maintenance we've been paying doesn't get us any other type of assistance in moving off the end-of-life product other than licensing.
