I had this issue previously, and if a KB search would work at the moment, id show you the article, but EmailXtract is working as intended, it doesn't shortcut Double Byte Character messages.

It will Archive them though.

Thanks

Have you tried installing the MS language pack for Thai on the EX server and enabled the MBCS registry setting?

Hi Jamie,

No i haven't tried installing the Thai language pack. Will definitely try that out. What's the registry setting for MBCS?

Kamal

Hi Josef,

Thanks for your response.

EX is definitely archiving a thai message and the search is also working fine. We can search for that particular message without worries. However, when I run the shortcut task (atleast to shortcut the messages which are in English (like the outlook 2003 welcome message), it skips all the messages complaining that it is Double Byte Character Message, even the english messages (not a word of thai character in it) will be skipped.

I did run the archive task and it works fine using EmaiExtract, but shortcut will not shortcut even 1 message.

Kamal

Hi Daniel,

Please send me the KB article (since powerlink is now accessible). Yes, EmailXtract is working as intended but it also skips the messages which are in english (how do we identify if the message is double byte)?

Thanks,
Kamal

HKLM\Software\OTG\Emailxtender
"DisableMBCSProcessing" - value = 0
dWord

0= disabled
1= enabled

So to 'enable' Multi-Byte Character Set you have to 'disable' this key (value = 0)

I've got a feeling this won't help with the shortcut issue but it won't hurt to try.

One other factor I should mention. When you enable MBCS indexing it can slow down processing. You should monitor the MSMQ's and EX resources to make sure there's no problems. We had to disable this because of the volume of journaled email we archive/index daily. We have a case open with EMC to fix the performance when using MBCS. - JJ

Please read EX guide.. MBCS shortcutting is not supported

October 31st, 2006 21:00

Yes, i know MBCS shortcutting is not supported. But even the messages which are in english are not shortcutted? A Microsoft Outlook Welcome message is all in english.

I wrote one test messge which contains all english text, even that message is not shortcutted! that's why I need to know why ALL MESSAGES are named as Double Byte Character Messages?

Also, I need to know when the shortcutting of MBCS messages will be supported as we have many customers here in Thailand who need to use that feature but can't because they communicate in Thai.

Did you ever resolve this issue Kamal?

I have the same issue on random messages and the shortcut task not picking them up. I've been told that there is a hotfix for this that EMC are working on.

Hi there,

no, I wouldn't know of a hotfix. I was told that this is too deep in the application (4.81) and Enhancement Requests have so far not led to a hotfix; one rather focuses on the next version. MBCS support is most likely only coming then.

Regards, Jochen.

Messages are not decided to be MBCS or DBCS from their contents, they are decided by the LOCALE ID tagged to the messages. In case of exchange there is property called PR_MESSAGE_LOCALE_ID tagged to every single message. If that happens to carry a value of MBCS or DBCS then EX might ignore it.

Explanation of these value can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/winxp/xp-lcid.mspx

You will need third part toold to see these properties
