Called Dell and they always transfer me to the people in INDIA, and they have no clue, they want to charge me, to be able to speak to an american for a software issue when this is not a software issue. I bought a 3 year warrantee on this stupid machine, and I am not happy they want to charge me more to get it fixed. IS IT POSSIBLE TO SPEAK TO AN AMERICAN?? I am really getting agitated.

that is exactly what I thought, and what I told them the microsoft website advised. They did not listen. The techs, if you can call them, know absoloutly nothing. They told me it was a HD issue, and the HD passed the dianostics. and that I would need to pay over $200 to get software support. I am furious about this. I have canceled my extended warrantee, this is the last straw, I will never again purchase a computer through Dell. This company has gone downhill.

I fully understand your sentiments.  You may receive a call from Dell asking, why you cancelled the warranty, then you can really express yourself.

haha, now I am tickled to death. I will definately express my feelings to them.

What happened to the days when you could call Dell and immediately get a tech from Round Rock, Texas who knew the computers inside and out, and knew exactly what they were doing?

The last time that happened to me, was the first part of 2002, later that year India replaced the US call centers.
The first time I contacted India, it was for a replacement HD, after three hours, they insisted it was the motherbother and a motherboard was shipped, even after I placed the phone against the case  and you could hear the HD making a noise, like nuts and bolts being shaken in a can.
Never have heard a motherboard make that type of noise.....
After a further two weeks, the replacement HD was shipped and the motherboard returned [ I've keeped all the paperwork to remind me about that fiasco].

Since then, I've kind of lost faith in Dell oversea's service, the only reason, I buy a Dell warranty, is for the hardware replacement, all the rest, including diagnosing the problem, replacing the hardware and any software problems, I'll take care of it myself, or contact a friend for a heads up, far less aggro..

Now when I contact Dell overseas, I always ask a leading question, that I know the answer to, if the reply is wrong, I hang up and start over again.
But, I must be fair, I have found some excellent Techies in their oversea's call centers.

So I fiddled with the BIOS and was able to reinstall windows. Before I messed with the BIOS I ran Dell Diagnostics on the whole system, everything passed. So I then went into the BIOS and under drives there are SATA settings, there were four settings: RAID Autodetect/AHCI,  RAID Autodetect/ATA, RAID On, and Combination. It was set on RAID Autodetect/AHCI, which was what it was on when I got the system from Dell. The way I got Windows XP to reinstall was to set it to Combination, and everything went smoothly. Can anyone tell me what all those settings are? Is using Combination OK? Whats the difference between the four?
