buslink problems

I recently purchased a Dell 2350 and attempted to add a buslink 1.1 USB, 20 GB hard drive that I had around.  Once I got to the point where it was installing the scsi driver, the computer crashed.  Is there anyone out there who can help remedy this problem?

hi

I know a work around for this issue. I guess u r trying to use 2 hard drives at the same time . what u could do is hook up the hard drive tot he same cable that is connected to ur other hard drive. that cable will have 2 connector one will go two the main hd and the other can be used for this hard drive. then use the fdisk tool to debug and partition it u will have to complete the format only then windows will be able to recognize it. mail me if u have any further issues at arun_k_m55@yahoo.com

I bought a Dell dimension 2350 and have been trying to connect the identical Buslink usb drive that you have without success. I downloaded and installed the 3in1 driver from Buslink that they say will work with windows XP. When running the new hardware wizard it finds and installs a usb-ide bridge driver and scsi adapter which is per Buslink instructions. My drive will show up in "my computer" after a delay but when I try to access it I get the hourglass continuously and can't escape from it until I shut off the drive. A Buslink rep called me and we went thru it again to no avail. He said it is a dell problem. So far dell tells me to contact the vendor. Dell did give one thing to try but it didn't work - am waiting on a response from them again via email. I connected a scanner and printer to the same Dell usb ports and they worked. My Buslink drive works perfectly on my Sony with windows 98 and 1.1 usb port. The dell usb port is a 2 but is supposed to be backward compatible. I will respond back if I have any success.

Adding to my previous posting about my usb external drive not working on my Dell Dimension 2350.

Yesterday I used "system restore" to restore my computer system to a point prior to my installing about 8 or 10 windows XP recommended updates.  I then was able to connect with the usb hard drive and it worked perfectly.  I now have to isolate which "update" caused this problem and will post it on here as soon as I know. (May be a few days)

Hopefully this will help others.

I have to apologize to Microsoft - it wasn't a windows XP update that caused the problem but Drive Image 7.01.  When I un-install Drive Image the usb drive works fine but when I reinstalled it I can't access the usb drive.  Not very comforting since I wanted to store the hard drive image on the usb drive.  Well I guess I will go and bug Symantic Tech support.
