Can't burn CD's using windows
Sorry about the other post.
Hi, I can not burn files to CD when I right click a file and use the send to menu. It starts to copy the files. A window pops up saying Windows encountered a problem copying the files, retry, skip or cancel. Other times it got as far as the CD writing wizard opening. Then it seems to time out then says it can not write the files. Other times when I try to access the CD drive Windows reports that Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have clicked on send error report. This has happened a couple times in the past before I reformatted and reinstalled everything. Now it happens everytime. I had downloaded all of the drivers for this thing from Dell. Like the chipset, video, audio, network cards and so on. I never saw one for the CD drive. I went to the CD/DVD drive's manufacturer and they indicate there is no driver for my CD drive model. Windows has the drivers already. However there is a firmware update for the drive on Dell's site. I do not understand what it does. I did try it and it did not fix it. I have manualy copied files to the "CD Burning" folder and the balloon pops up like it should but it still will not burn when I click "Write these files to CD". This happens if I am trying to burn a CD-RW or a DVD+-RW.
Here are the steps I have taken so far.
Reseated the CD drive.
Checked device manager. Everything is ok. Uninstalled it, rebooted and still didn't work.
Clicked Troubleshoot. Nothing described my problem.
On the D drive properties, "Enable CD recording on this drive" is checked.
On the DLA tab, "Enable DLA on your drives" is checked. I have tried different combos of these settings to no avail.
Ran the diagnostics cd Dell sent me. Everything passed.
Then I tried the drive firmware update from Dell.
Dell of course says it's a software problem. I have had this thing for almost a year now and I have had problems with it since day 1. The printer software would have to be reinstalled now and then. It would say no printer installed or things would be gone. Too many things to list. I have tried everything I could get my hands on. It has been literaly one thing after another. Now this. Did I mention hours and hours and hours searching these forums and the internet and have a friend of mine who realy knows computers spend hours and hours working on it. We used the built in Dell restore utility twice. This time we reformatted and installed from the Windows disc and all the other discs. We have tried chkdsk /f and /r. I am at my wits end and about to demand my money back.
Please if anyone can help I'll try anything before I have to deal with the crapy Dell support. This thing is almost out of waranty. I was sick for a while. That is why I am just now getting around to posting here and conntacting support. Time is running out.
Please help. Any ideas will be greatly apreciated. Thank you.

is often troublesome. The DVDs do not work for you because the
built-in Windows XP burning software only supports CD media and
will not recognize DVD media.

Thanks for the reply. I did wonder if Windows couldn't burn DVD's. I have been using Memorex CD's for a long time with no problem. This is the first time I used DVD's however. But before I bought the DVD's I was trying to burn using regular CD's with the same results. Like I said now it get's hung up while the files are being copied to the CD Burning folder when I right click something and use the Send To menu. With or without a disc in the drive. And even if I place files in the CD Burning folder myself, It still won't burn them. I click on the balloon and the D drive window opens and it's blank. There are no files showing. I go back to the CD Burning folder and the files are still there. I have done this several times on another XP computer and that method works fine.
I am wondering if I should've posted in another board. It does seem to be Windows and not the CD drive.
Thanks

I am having exactly the same problem with NEC DVD+-RWND6650A burner. I too have been told by Dell that it is a software problem and not a problem with the drive.
I have just purchased Roxio Media Creator Suite 8 and to try and rectify the problem. However, now having uninstalled Sonic and install the Roxio software when I try to overwrite a document I get a blue screen pc crash error message STPO0X00000027,which I cannot find a solution to. I have even tried looking on the Roxio website but without success.
If you find a solution please, please let me know.

Entering your error into MSKB gives a similar type of problem with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 Platinum

Have a look here as well, you might need to update the Sonic Record Engine

Many thanks for your suggestion. I have had a look at the instructions on the website link and will give it a try to see if I can rectify the problem.
