CD/ DVD not working

Hello

Scope of problem:

  • Windows will not recognize a CD or DVD in the tray. The DVD RW drive is mapped as F:
  • The Windows "Insert a disc" prompt comes up even though there is a disc in the drive.

Computer model:

  • System: Dell XPS 8300
  • Operating system: Win 7 Home Premium, SP1
  • DVD/CD-ROM drive: TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SH-216BB

I went through this procedure with no success. The findings are:

  • the drive is recognized in BIOS
  • Dell System Detect installs SupportAssist and determines "No updates are available"
  • Run Hardware and Device troubleshooter for Windows 7 indicates "Hardware changes might not have been detected" and no change to CD/DVD
  • Run Microsoft Fix It, "Media in CD/DVD drive is not readable (TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SH-216BB Not Fixed" (Although the media works in other machines)
  • Reinstall the driver for the optical disk drive results in no change

I went through this procedure by Sundeep B with no change to CD/DVD drive. And performed a system diagnostic by hitting F12 at the dell logo and the thorough tests were all pass.

I'm fresh out of ideas and would appreciate some perspective/ advice on how to proceed.

Thanks!!
