Device Driver Not Found: 'MSCD001'

Hi

I was having some big problems with Win98 last week and decided that the best thing to do would be to format the C drive . I've done it before on desktops and haven't had a problem booting and installing from CD and so on but with my Inspiron 3800 I have one pretty big problem.

Having booted up from a Win98 boot disk I get the error "Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'. No valid CDROM device drivers selected".

I've done what every website suggests and checked both the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys and i've tried running the MSCDEX.exe but that doesn't work. Because the Insprion 3800 has only one module bay (and therefore you have to take the CD drive out to put the floppy drive in) it doesn't detect that the computer has a CD device at all. I need to have the floppy drive in because it needs to boot from the boot disk, and I can't boot from a bootable CD because the computer doesn't recognise the drive.

Can anyone please help me, its driving me insane trying to figure out a solution

Your time is much appreciated

if you copy of win98 is bootable, some are, then try changing the boot order in bios to cdrom drive as the first device then boot from the cd.
you'll get the same options as using the win98 startup floppy.

That was the first thing I did. But because the computer doesn't recognise the CD drive it doesn't do a thing.

I've even taken the floppy drive of the list of things to boot from in the BIOS menu so that the CD drive is the only thing I ask it to boot from but it says "Invalid system disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"

I live with 2 computer students so we've pretty much exhausted all the obvious things to try

Cheers anyway, any other suggestions?

sounds like you have a non-bootable cd.

have a look at the last 2 postings in this thread, http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=1205177

I've used the Dell Win98 CD which came with the computer

I've used the Dell Backup CD which came with the computer

I've used my mates copy of Win98, Win2000 AND WinXP CD's

the point is, my CD drive is not detected and there are no drivers installed
