Disk Read Error

Hi,

I have an Inspiron 6400, running with Vista, and am getting the message 'A Disk Read Error Occurred' when attempting to log on.

It says to press 'ctrl+alt+delete' to continue, but this is unsuccessful.

I have run a diagnostics test which has thrown up an error code: 0146, and an apparent failure on the hard drive ;'dst short test'.

I fear the worst for the hard drive. Can anyone please advise if there is anything else I can try, or confirm that I need  a new hard drive?

If so, does anyone know what would be compatible with my laptop?
