DVD Burner problem
When I burn a dvd a get this error message "Power Calibration Error", i've tried with different dvd-r and dvd+r brands but I always get the same error, my dvd burner is a Sony DW-Q58A and my system is a Inspiron 6400, searching i've found that I need to refresh the firmware but I don't know where to download it and how to install it, sorry for my english.

I have tried at least 5 different brands of DVD's. All 5 tries end up choppy playback in the laptop but work ok in both a PC and a normal DVD player. I do figure it is the SONY. More to follow.Air_Carter

I have been having choppy playing issue, and i have a dell inspiron 9400 which has the Sony DW-Q58A DVD burner. It slows down the pc while reading from the drive and everytime play a dvd is very choppy, i just can't watch movies at all... i dunno but dell or sony better do something about it. Maybe a firmware update or something.CCM in Ottawa

There is no SONY firmware update available from Dell. Trust me - I asked for one and the tech could not find one. Just get a new DVD ROM from them. I expect mine in the mail this week.
PS. Depending on the warranty you purchased, you have 30 days for a complete replacement laptop. I got the 3yr NBD and the tech told me that I could ask for a replacement laptop within the first 30 days. If the new DVD ROM does the same choppy thing I will force them to give me a new laptop.

Receive my NEC replacement today. All works OK now. Noticed a comment on another forum re the SONY. Here is a cut and past of it:

yup, the drive being in pio mode is a problem.
right click your secondary ide channel>uninstall then reboot.
recheck to make sure that the drive has gone back to udma 2 mode.++++
For those of you still with the SONY - try this.
- Is the Sony website itself offering any firmware upgrade for this burner even though it might be proprietairy to Dell??? Sometime you could get some interesting surprises...Out of loop, here is an example: On my desktop PC (Not-Dell), I have a Pioneer DVR-108. I have visited the Pioneer web site to find the latest firmware... it turned out that the firmware upgrade , listed there Transformed the 8x DVD+/-RW burner into a 16X ... well I realized that after upgrading the firmware, and went back into Nero and started to run a test drive of the newly firmware upgraded drive... to my surprise, 16x was available un the speed selections. I tried it and worked Top notch. I was reading these posts ( I am expecting a inspiron 6400 next week) and will check if it's a NEC or a Sony... I'd be happy to have the former , but if there is something for the Sony drive avilable soon , it would hurt either to have a look over there.

Verify the transfer mode in your IDE controllers..
They must be ultra DMA mode.
If some of them are PIO mode, delete the channel and re-install them.
In my D620 it worked fine.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6400 and have had it for a week. Has the SONY DW-Q58A like you.
It freezes (choppy playback) when reading burnt DVD's (checked DVDs on other systems OK). Talked to Dell support and the girl told me no, you do not have a SONY CD/DVD it is a NEC. She even sent me a firmware update for the NEC. Well, I know how to read the device manager and it was telling me SONY.
So, I ran the firmware upgrade (the NEC one) and low and behold it told me no NEC drive detected. Duh.
Other posts on this site indicate that this SONY is garbage.
Just called DELL and a replacement is on the way. More to follow.
