I believe two of the Vista versions (Basic and Home) do not come with DVD software. Fortunately, there is a very nice free DVD decoder called VLC Media Player (link below). I recommend it frequently.
Thank you for your answer. In the last four years since I bought my last computer things have changed - and I haven't kept up. My old DVD player was ready to go out of the box, and I expected this one to be the same. I just downloaded the VLC Media player but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Hopefully tomorrow. I will post again after I learn how to use it and let you know how it worked out. I downloaded it from Uberdownloads, and got a bonus - a couple of very useful programs.
Thanks again - I really appreciate your answer. I was feeling kind of lost . . .

Let me know if it worked for you!
