How safe is my raid 1

I recently got an XPS 400 desktop and I am happy with it (except the disk is noisy).  I ordered 160GB Data Security RAID 1 (2 x 160GB SATA HDDs).

My question is: How safe is this disk?  Should I be backing it up on an external disk like I did with my last computer?

Yes.   Data could be deleted accidently, a Virus, etc.   You may want a older version of the file etc.   I have my RAID 1 system backed up by Norton Ghost daily.   Allows me to keep 30-60 days of files changes on a seperate disk.   Besides this I backup to DVD once in a while file I need to backup, this process I do not do as much as I should but...

But the disk itself is safe from a disk failure?  It is two separate disks and if one fails the one still works?

I had one failure, everything kept functioning.   Replaced failed disk and re-build Disk-Array.   Worked like a charm.   Only down time was when I replaced the disk.
