1 Did you request the disk using the link mentioned above? 2 Let me know the status of the diagnostics indicators mentioned above? 3 Did you try performing the test after inserting any disk in the system?
1. I tried to request the disk but there was no place to indicate my o.s. All I saw was Windows 7 and no space for indicating Windows Vista.
2. I thought I needed the above mentioned disk to perform the diagnostics so I did not repeat the test, figuring the end result would be the same...namely, I would have to insert the disk to continue.
3. What do you mean by "any" disk? Doesn't it have to be the disk I am supposed to be requesting?
By the way, the following is an example of the place my computer freezes at. To me it seems to be part of the booting action that never gets to be completed.

Sorry to be so dumb... This is the first problem I've had with my Dell computer running Vista. My previous computer was a Dell Windows ME! I had it over 5 years and got to know it intimately but this Vista system is foreign to me. Thanks for your help in this. I will await further instructions from you.
You might try replacing the CMOS battery on the mainboard for starters. If that doesn't help, given the age of the system and that two drives are malfunctioning, you might also consider replacing the power supply.
Hi Manshu..Still struggling with Vista desktop computer XPS Dimension.
I clicked on the link you sent and requested the disk. I received 2 FedEx pkgs yesterday. One has one disk titled "drivers and utilities" for Dell Dimension and Dell XPS Computer Software. Contents: Device drivers and Diagnostics and utilities. It says on the disk that the software is already installed on my computer and it is to be used only to install the software. Also, "You must boot your computer from this media to run the diagnostics, which may require changing your computer's boot sequence. See your Owner's Manual for information."
The other Dell pkg contained three disks:
1. Application..already installed on your computer
2. Operating System ..already installed on your computer... For reinstalling Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit SP1
3. Roxio Creator starter,,already installed on your computer .
Did you want me to run the disk titled "drivers and utilities"? Will the disk direct me to that section? and, if I have to, how do I change the boot sequence? As I mentioned before, I never received an owner's manual.
Error Code 0F00:137B means there is no DVD in the DVD drive to test the DVD. This is a common error to ignore.
If you get a blinking dash / cursor. Suggest you do the following.
1. On Dell logo tap F2 get into BIOS page -> Drives -> SATA 0 - Drive 1 Check under drive details whether it shows Seagate HDD / ST######## some number and drive capacity like 250 GB / 320 GB / 500 GB etc... and its ON
2. Choose Maintenance hit enter -> Load Defaults -> Continue to load the defaults for the BIOS
3. Choose Drives -> Diskette drive -> move it to OFF (If you dont have a floppy drive)
4. Choose Integrated Devices / On board devices -> Select Integrated Audio -> Turn it OFF (Hit enter and press left arrow key to highlight off and hit enter) (If you connect the speakers to a sound card else leave it on).
5. Now press Esc -> Save and Exit.
Still it doesnt work then Tap F12 and run IDE Drive diagnostics and post the results
Mark the the thread as resolved if these steps works for you.
You have received the disk of the operating system and resource disk (drivers and utilities). I would suggest you to perform express test on the system again and ensure that the resource disk (drivers and utilities) is inside the optical drive while the test is running.
In case of no error code, restart the system and tap F8 key to access advance options.
If the advance options don't show up, insert the Operating system disk and perform re-installation of the windows using the link mentioned below:
thank you veejdeej and Manshu. I decided to bring the processor to Staples for diagnostics. The result was a dead hard drive. They claim that they will transfer all data from the hard drive to their computer system before replacing hard drive and after the new hard drive is installed, they will transfer that data back to that new hard drive. It sounds too good to be true. If it comes to pass, it will be worth the extra cost. Thanks again for responding to my pleas for help. Hopefully I will not be needing more help for a bit, but....who knows....?

This is a good budget unit of superior quality to the OEM unit: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
