We bought a DVD-CD burner for our computer. Our computer already had a dvd and cd rom but not the burner. We plugged both of the devices in and when we powered up our computer the monitor would freeze. Can you help us?

Hi MikeDebbie,
What jumper setting on the back of the drive did you use? Dell ships theirs their systems using the Cable Select jumper feature. May I ask what Dell system do you have and Operating system, which drive did you remove and where was it sitting, Top Bay or Second Bay?
Happy New Year !!

Hi MikeDebbie,
I am not sure what you mean bye monitor freezing up, but for now lets start with a clean/fresh install of these drives. If you can get to Device Manager, select the burner, click Uninstall, then select the other optical drive you left in the system and click Uninstall, Shut down.
If you cannot get to Device Manager, shut the system down, open the case and disconnect the IDE cable and power cable from both drives, then boot your system and let Windows load normally, if you have not dislodged the video card, the system should work fine. Now shut down once more.
You need to place the small plastic jumper on the back of the burner to Cable Select, it may say Cable, CS, CSEL.
Place this drive in the Top Bay of your system, attach the "End" connection of the IDE cable to this drive, whichever drive you decide to keep should go in the second/middle bay, this drive should already have its jumper on Cable Select, attach the "middle" connection of the IDE cable to this drive. Do not forget the power cables for both drives.
Now turn your system back on and see if all is well.
Happy New Year !!
