Making coasters
New LiteOn SHM 165H6S (see:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106015 ) in Dimension 4300S, my baby. Updated successfully with latest firmware in order to recognize most media.
Have subsequently successfully burned to DVD-R and DVD+R media, CD-Rs (TDK) and a few HP Lightscribe CD-Rs. Lightscribe is indeed very cool. No problems with that.
Have had problems with several consecutive coasters using the HP media, just trying to burn audio CDs with fully updated Nero 6. Tried backing off the burn speed form 48x to 40x, and also disabled Zone Alarm and NAV. Burn failed again, with the indication "Drive not ready", followed by "Burn process failed". The files are simply .mp3 files that are automatically converted to .cda by Nero ("Make audio cd" option in Nero SmartStart). Have had success with this same media a few times, including once yesterday on a group of .wav files that failed the first time around. Wondering if the HP media is just poor. I've heard Verbatim is very good. Any ideas what I might be experiencing here? Drive, Nero, or media issue? Like anybody I hate making coasters, especially with more expensive lightscribe discs. Any input appreciated!!

Hi Jeff and thanks for responding. Looks like everything is "DMA if available", so you can check that one off. Haven't tried a burn since the last failure. Will pick up some Verbatim LS discs, just to compare. Probably take another shot at it tonight :smileywink: .
Just noting again that burning to some CDs and to DVD was problem-free and the drive really seems to be fantastic. Very well-reviewed on Newegg and I've certainly had some success with it. I'm hoping its just a media issue, but we'll see.

i use nero 7 so some of this might be different
if you use nero express, you will always get problems makeing audio disks, even pre-ripped mp3s will get DRM errors
just use the regular interface401

Thanks DTT - I've not had problems with Nero Express b4 but you still may have something there. No files wrapped in DRM from what I can tell.
Update: This has been a bit of a schizophrenic experience, but I may be on the right track. I downloaded the Nero mega plugin pack (Friday) from softpedia so I could burn most types of files (all I really needed was the FLAC plugin) and installed it and subsequently every single burn failed. "Drive Not Ready" and "Power Calibration Error" messages galore. Five straight coasters! So I said the heck with Nero and went to WMPlayer and easily burned the same files that failed so many times in Nero, first try. Hmmm. Uninstalled the plugin pack, rebooted, and subsequently successfully burned a CD with Nero. Crazy stuff. BTW Lightscribe portion of Nero has been error-free the whole time. Still not sure I trust Nero again, but look forward to figuring this out. If Nero continues to be a problem with audio CDs I certainly have workarounds with WMP, MusicMatch, Windows, etc. Nero has not yet given me a problem with DVDs. 100% success rate there after about 5 or 6 discs.
J/C - does anybody have a favorite free burning app?

Jeff, if you're reading this (or any others obviously)... I'm considering disabling the IMAPI cd burning services under administrative tools. I've seen this referneced a few times in relation to NERO power calibration errors. This would disable any burning capability of Windows or Media Player it seems, but I can live without that if NERO burns cleanly. NERO is a more comprehensive burning app. Any thoughts?401

See if this information from another Member is the same as you found, Section 6-5, article 3 of the CD/RW link.
I would give it a try and see if it does help.

Thanks Jeff - yep, I've seen it mentioned before also for speeding up Nero, just like your link indicates. Great job on compiling all that info! Lots more for me to read there.
Update: I'm 2-for-2 after disabling the IMAPI cd burning service in XP. I used 2 different types of media. First was a Sony cd-r, second was an HP Lightscribe cd-r. I will note that the drive appears a bit finicky about the HP lightscribe discs. Usually when I put one in the drive spins endlessly, clicking all the while. Not the case with a standard cd-r. One or two spins and it stops. I think the HP media is not quite up to par. I have a small pack of Verbatims that I plan to try, and am considering the Taiyo Yuden discs. I dig the lightscribe big-time and want to continue to pursue getting quality LS discs. I'm absolutely convinced that this is an excellent DVD-RW drive, so I believe its just working out the kinks between Nero, Windows, and the involved media. I should reiterate that the drive's firmware has been updated to the latest version.
I'll certainly post back if there continue to be issues.

I am going to throw this out there just to check. The drive has not for some reason dropped into PIO mode instead of DMA?
I tend to like the Verbatim and Fujiflim brands myself, never had any problems with them. I would at least go that route before tinkering with your set-up and software at the moment.
