My brother was booting my computer, when the Main breaker tripped,(to the House). When I restarted It did boot into XP, but was very slow Maybe 15 minutes to get everything on the desktop. So I thought if I did a shut down and a restart it would reset itself. I did not do a restart till the next day, instead of booting I got an error message stating that windows had an Unmountable_boot_Volume. I could not get it to boot into safe mode or last Known good configuration after much wrangling do to my inexperience with computers. I got into the Windows XP installation CD and tried the repair mode.
I got it to fix the Boot Sector file which it said was corrupt, but when I ran the Bootcfg /scan, it would not complete the scan and It would have to be able to complete if I wanted to run the Bootcfg /rebuild command. It said to run Chkdsk, I ran both the chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r. Both stopped at 50% saying I had one or more unrecoverable errors on my hard drive. All the diagnostic lites are green on the back of my computer. when I exited from the Recovery Consule and tried to boot up I got a window that said
Windows could not start because a file was missing \system32\hal.dll .
My corrupted computer(desktop) has XP Home , a Dim 2400 2.6 ghz. while my laptop is (which I am writing this post) is a Latitude C610 P3 1200 ghz. with XP Pro. I have located this file on my laptop C:\windows\system32\HAL.dll ,
Can install this file using the Recovery Console? Will it do anygood or is my hard drive Bad ? If my hard drive is bad do I still install this to try and recover information off my hard drive?
Sincerily

PS : What an idiot I am for not backing everything up. What a mistake. Man I like to Kick myself in the !!
I ran the recovery consule as suggested and ran the Bootcfg /rebuild command and it failed with the message :
Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system. Which would prevent Bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detect and disk errors .
As I mentioned in my previous post, I have allready ran this with no success. I will try running the dell diagnsotic from the CDs i got with computer.
Thanks for the Quick responses I really appreciate the help.

Use the extended test on the hard drive [read, write and verify], not the co-called express test.

The hard drive has failed and you need to replace it.

thankyou for your time and quick responces, I realy am thankful for the information.
I kind of figured that was going to be the problem.
So I have a couple questions Can I try and pull some info from My Pictures, my documents,etc... using the bad drive as a slave?
If I do try and use it as a slave, can it corrupt the new drive I install?
What would you recomend as a replacement? It is not under Warranty any more. and I would like to install it myself. I do plan on buying another Dell in the forseeable future.
Try to buy either a Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung or Hitachi ATA/IDE/EIDE hard drive. Avoid Maxtor. Check the lenght of the warranty, there's one to five years [Seagate] on hard drives.
Check out your local big box computer stores, sometimes they have good specials on hard drives or try
Newegg.
Remember to set the jumpers to "Cable Select".
Regards to recovering data, install the new drive, reinstall XP and after you have fully installed all the updates, then install the old drive as the "Slave" and see if you can transfer the files to the new hard drive. Personally, I would not use a failed drive as a secondary, it could create problems.

Thanks for the suggestions on the hard drive, and the links.
As for using the corrupt drive as a secondary, that was not my plan, I just wanted to pull some files off of it. Then I was going to take back out. Thanks again for all your help.
