zero bytes on commercially pressed CDs

I have an Inspiron 5100 with a HL-DT-ST_RW/DVD_GCC-4241N CDRW/DVR drive. The drive insists that there are zero bytes on any CD. The system passes the downloadable Dell system checker. Upon booting into the diagnostics partition, the CD hardware test read and seek sections cannot be completed because they need a CD with data, and the diagnostic utility believes that all CDs are empty. DVDs play without problem.

Any thoughts?

ProcyonNative,

Sounds like you have the same problem in Windows and in the Dell Diagnostics. That points to a faulty drive which should be replaced.

Not the first thing to go wrong with the machine. Ready to buy the Core 2 with the Vista upgrade coupon, but somehow I can't find it on the site.
