Access a Dell SCv2020 When Admin Credentials Are Unavailable

What This Guide Covers

How to regain administrative access to a Dell SCv2020 (SC Series) when the management username/password are unknown—using the supported USB unlock.phy procedure and standard connectivity methods.

Quick Fix Summary

  • Use the unlock.phy USB method to temporarily allow login as Admin and reset passwords.
  • Connect via Dell Storage Manager (DSM) to the array’s management IP (port 3033) after inserting the USB in the lead controller.

Overview

In scenarios such as equipment transfers or mergers, the Dell SCv2020 may arrive without known credentials for the Storage Center OS (SCOS) management interface. Dell provides a documented recovery approach that uses a USB key with a specific file to temporarily unlock an administrator account, enabling password resets through System Manager/DSM—no data access or destructive action is required to perform the credential recovery itself.

Error Indicators

  • Inability to log in to System Manager/DSM with unknown or invalid credentials.
  • SSH/BMC reachable but management services not accessible without credentials.

Possible Causes

  • Credentials were not transferred during a handover.
  • Accounts are locked or disabled following failed login attempts.
  • Device managed previously by a third party with credentials not available to current admins.

Troubleshooting Steps

1) Confirmed Fix — Use the USB unlock.phy Procedure

This is the documented recovery method for SC Series systems running SCOS. It temporarily allows the Admin account to authenticate so you can unlock/reset passwords.

  1. Prepare a USB drive
    • Format as MSDOS/FAT32 with a single partition. (Some USB vendors format differently; if needed, create an MSDOS/FAT32 partition using Disk Management or equivalent.)
  2. Create the unlock file
    • Create a text file named unlock.phy containing a single line: unlock Admin (Do not include angle brackets; Admin is the built-in account name.)
  3. Insert the USB in the lead controller
    • If unsure which controller is lead, try one controller first; if not recognized after ~30 seconds, try the other.
  4. Wait ~30 seconds for SCOS to mount the USB.
  5. Log in to System Manager/DSM as Admin
    • Use any non-empty string in the password field; the password is ignored while unlocked.
  6. Unlock accounts and reset passwords for required users. Remove the USB when done.

Tips

  • Smaller/older USB drives can be more reliable for this process.
  • If the array has two controllers, ensure both are healthy and paired; use controller show at the serial console to verify state and IPs if needed.

2) Connect Through DSM (Management Client)

  • Discover/connect to the SCv2020 using DSM, specifying port 3033 and the array’s management IP. Run DSM with administrative rights on your workstation and ensure network reachability (same subnet/routing).

3) Use the Serial Console if Network Discovery Fails

  • The SCv2020 provides a 3.5 mm serial jack (upper right on the top controller). Use a 3.5 mm-to-RS‑232 serial cable (then RS‑232‑to‑USB adapter if needed). Serial parameters: 115200/8/N/1. From there, you can run diagnostics such as controller show to confirm the lead controller and IP configuration.

4) Engage Dell Support if the Unlock Method Doesn’t Work

  • If the USB method is unsuccessful (e.g., due to system state or prior partial resets), Dell Support can guide recovery steps. Out-of-warranty options are available through post‑standard support contracts.

Additional Notes

  • The SCv2020’s BMC and MGMT can share a physical port; you may see one MAC with multiple IP addresses when sniffing traffic. Management access is via DSM on the SC management IP (not the BMC interface).
  • For security, Dell recommends configuring BMC on a non‑routable network where applicable.
  • For comprehensive operations and configuration, refer to the Dell Storage Manager 2020 R1 Administrator’s Guide on the SCv2020 support page.
