BCV to BCV copy.

Hi folks,

We have an environment where we used to have a timefinder reletionship between a STD and a BCV. This was split off every night, and the BCV was mounted to be backed upto tape. Once a month, we would create a clone session between the BCV and another BCV device. This was used for a decision support system. All these devices resided on a DMX2000 running microcode 5670. We migrated the devices to a DMXSeries 3 running 5771 microcode. However when we attempted to create the clone session between the BCV and the clone BCV we got an error message. This relates to Primus solution emc137707.

As clone emulation is in place, I then attempted to create a timefinder reletionship between the production BCV, and the decision support BCV, so we could run symmir commands as opposed to symclone commands. However when attempting to do so the following is displayed:

The device must be a Standard device for this function.

Is there anyway for us to do a timefinder mirror/clone copy of the BCV device to another BCV device? We cannot attach the decision support BCV to the STD device, as we need the second BCV device to be an exact replica of the first. Any suggestions appreciated.

Dav

RAID5 BCV devices. I am aware that this causes clone emulation to take place. But as I mentioned, using concurrent BCV devices is not an option, we need to find a method of cloning etc from the production BCV to another BCV device. This worked under old microcode, but not under new microcode.

did you use regular BCVs on the old array?

I think the answer is yes .. you can clone a BCV (a "real" bcv) but you can't clone a clone target (raid5 bcvs)...

I don't think there are options .. You need to terminate existing relations between backup-bcv and production (symmir cancel), clone backup-bcv to other-bcv and full-establish backup-bcv against production (symmir -full est).

Oh yes, this is an option .. but it requires the customer to change the binfile and the protection .. Even if it's a good option (more disk space, you know ;-)) it will cost more .. :D

So it's my favourite ;-)

yep, business requirements may outweigh the extra cost. It would be nice to be able to clone a device that already has a clone session with another device. Does anybody know if it's on the road map ?
