Mapping VCMDB to FA ports

i have never heard of "mapping VCMDB" to an FA. As long as you have VCMDB initialized (and sounds like you already have) and have "VCM_State(VCM)" flag on the FA set to "Enabled" ..you should be ready to go.

Your EMC CE can perform a channel assignment change for you or you can do a map via symconfigure. Others on the forum can provide the details. Note that once you have enabled the VCM director flag the new ports will be under the control of the device masking software BUT you don't absolutely need the actual VCMDB device to be assigned to these channels. As long as you know the appropriate HBA WWN's you can configure up the device masking via another FA port connected to an Admin host.

i see ..i guess every time my CE adds new FAs ..he goes ahead and maps VCM device to it. I found one thing that is worth noting ..this is from device masking cli guide.

Beginning with Enginuity Version 5670, the VCMDB can be
unmapped from any director that is not being used for masking
control.
Note: If you have PowerPath installed, you should keep the VCMDB
mapped.

Exactly 100% correct.

In a PowerPath environment you should assign the VCMDB to the all fibre paths so the HBA WWN's can be more easily / accurately determined via symmask commands. But this is not a requirement for actual device masking operation (at 5670 & SE 5.4 and above).
