SMC and VMAX Lun Migration question
I am trying to understand the capabilities and limitations of lun migrations on the VMAX.
Under the Tasks tab in SMC 7.1, I run the Lun Migration Wizard but it seems to only allow me to perform a lun migration if I am moving the source to a different protection type. Ie: if I have a 25GB Raid 5 lun, it won't let me migrate it to a different raid5 lun but will allow me to migrate it to a Mirrored lun because it's a change in Protection type.
I'm trying to accomplish migrating a smaller lun to a larger lun with the same protection type (similar to what I can do in Navisphere on CX3/4 arrays).
Am I missing something or is this a limitation on VMAX and SMC?
Thanks.
Jim

Jim,
from symmetrix array conrols cli product guide,
You cannot migrate protected devices to an unprotected protection type.
Migrations of unprotected source devices to unprotected target are supported.
You cannot migrate to the same protection type (RAID 5 (3+1) to RAID 5 (3+1)
and the same disk group number (disk group 1 to disk group 1). The desired
protection type or disk group number must be different from what exists on the
source devices.
Device types not supported:
• VDEVs (TimeFinder Snap)
• Thin devices
• DATA devices
• Vault devices/SFS/VCM
• SAVE devices
Hope this answers.

Jim, I don't think you can change the size as part of the vlun migration. Just disk group and or raid protection

thanks. It would really be nice if the lun migration was more clariion-like where protection factor didn't matter and the migration could occur to any lun, same size or larger.
