V-Max SATA sequential read perfomance

Hello everybody!

Configuration: Symmetrix VMax 32Gb cache, thin pool 13Tb 2-Way Mir with evenly allocation tracks (no disk was added since VMax installed)

I'm stuck at one problem - sequential reading by backup operation or just copy to another location has low perfomance (about 100Mbit/s)

But if I test device by IOMeter with multithread load - perfomance is good... And I don't get it why it so slow on reading operation. I'm copy data from Clarrion to Symm at the same server and speed was impressive, but now...

OS Windows 2003 SP2 x64, partitions was created with DISKPART align=1024 as EMC say.

Any advise, best practice?

Hi Quincy,

Thanks for your reference.

Why would Raid10 on VMAX would take more time to process read data while same query same data on the Clariion takes quite smaller time.

Is it VMAX doesn’t handle sequential Read and Write workload better than Clariion family.

Govinda,

Those charts don't tell me how you are testing, or what your success criteria are.  Just comparing the test to a VNX isn't saying what you expect.  I'm sure there are lots of tests we could run where the VMAX would show much higher performance and lots of cases where the VNX would show higher performance. Every storage architecture has different characteristics for various workload types.

The response times don't look like what I would expect for sequential IO.    Maybe somehow the IO is really random when it gets to the VMAX.

I didn't say that sequential would be lower on the VMAX than VNX, but depending on your test and the IO profile and the configuration of both arrays, it is possible that the VNX may perform better. 

As I said, your response times are much too high for a sequential workload with IO sizes about 50K.  We should have response times 1ms or less.

Again, if I know specifically HOW you are testing, I may be able to offer more assistance.
