what does hyper means?

What does hyper means? What is the relationship between hyper and logical device? I can see every standard device have 2 hypers on ECC console, why?
Thanks.

Owenxie .. my 2 cents ...

"hyper" is a very abused word since usually you'll find someone using that word while talking about slices of disks that the code will use to form a logical device .. But from time to time you can find someone using a different meaning.

But I think that the most common (and I hope the right) meaning is "slice of physical disk".

So the relation between an hyper and a logical device (or a symdev if you prefer) is the protection. You pick up some unprotected hypers and "merge" them in a single symdev applying a protection scheme.

In your case I think that the protection choosen is mirroring. With mirroring you take two identical hypers and "merge" them in a single symdev, the same size of a single hyper, but with added protection.

When using RAID, your symdev will have "relations" with 4, 8 or 16 different hypers.
An unprotected volume (usually a BCV) will have a single hyper.

How to find how many hypers in a device , any command ? in ECC control center GUI I couldn¿t find out
Number of hypers for a device I am on storage systems  symmetrix  XXX  mapped devices  and I select the type
Standard Raid5 , then I seen device ,name , status , confi and other but not number of hypers for that device ..

Thank you..

pctech321 if you want to find how many hypers form a symdev, in ECC right click on the device, choose "Relationship" and then "Hypers" :-)

You can also have almost the same output via symcli using the symdev command.

symdev -sid 123 show CAFE

The output will show you informations on the so called backend.. Tomorrow I'll post an example ..

Have fun !! :-)

In ECC, you can also select "Visual Storage" view to get it phisically.

Here you can see some outputs of the "symdev show"..

Unfortunatly in Hex, we can have 0BAD devices and we can also have a lot of CAFE and BEEF ... but no wine or beer ;-)

Santhosh could you please put your question in a different way ?? From your post I can only understand that you have a BCV volume, which is a meta and you have also RDF .. I can imagine that your host is HP-UX .. But could you help us in helping you ?? :-)

Hmm Rob I think you have to convert from base 10 to something else .. :-) But please don't share the conversion .. keep it for yourself :-)
