Adding LSI Controller for Tape Backup

We have a Dell PowerEdge R730 with the Perc H730 controller and (4) SAS Drives. Running W2K 2016.

We just purchased a LTO-7 external drive, and an LSI SAS 9207-4I4E. The card has been inserted into a PCIe slot, external cable hooked up, device on.

But the O/S does not show in device manager that any additional devices are available, there's no llisting for the LSI controller under storage controllers, and there's no OTHER DEVICES listed.

I cannot figure out why the OS is not seeing the SAS controller.

The built-in PERC H730 only has (2) internal SAS cable/ports, and they both are presently connected up front to the SAS Drive bays.  Since it doesn't have an external SFF8088, I cannot hook up the drive to the PERC.

I'm stuck. Need some help figuring this out. I need to get our server backed up, and I cannot do that without getting the O/S to see the added LSI controller (non-raid).

    Hello rbrittoncs,

Since you are using a R730 server you need to use a 12gb SAS HBA.  Here is a link to the support matrix & if you look on page 11 it states the following “6 Gbps and 12 Gbps cards are not interchangeable between the server generations. 13G & 14G servers only support 12Gbps SAS adapters.” http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/ml3_lt08_lt06_lt07_110t_lt03_ml6000_tl1000_tl2000_tl4000_rd1000_lt05_140_compatibility_matrix2_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hello rbrittoncs,

Yes you are correct, if you get a 12GB sas controller then you can connect your tape drive to your server. Also you can have both your PERC card and a 12GB sas controller in your server.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hi Friend:

Ok. So it looks like the HBA I have in now isn't supported because it's a 6gb SAS, not a 12gb SAS.

So if I pick up a 12gb SAS HBA like an LSI Logic SAS 9300-8e SGL (LSI00343), it'll work as a SAS controller for my R730 and my LTO-7 Tape drive?

My R730 already has the Perc H730. (The Perc H730 controls my primary drive array). So I would add this LSI 12gb SAS HBA in addition to the Perc H730 in order to have my tape drive be able to be used with the server?
