Advice about OpenManage

* You need the .exe files, not the .msp files.

* It depends on what is in the serveradministrator directory.  I recommend you uninstall any old OpenManage from the servers and install the new OpenManage Server Administrator from OM_5.4.0_ManNode_A01.exe.

* You can access IT Assistant from a web browser anywhere on your local network, so you do not need anything on the workstations except for IE6 or IE7.

* I recommend installing IT Assistant on a system that does not already have SQL on the system.  If you want to use your existing SQL, you will need to install a default instance of the database.  The IT Assistant download, OM_5.4.0._MgmtStat_A00.exe, has SQL 2005 Express in it, you can run the installer from the Prerequisite Checker that will come up when you run setup.exe from the extracted files.

* If I understand your question correctly, yes, OMSA does not need SQL, only ITA.

I've installed the Server Administrator on all my MS servers, then deleted the old version installation files. (the software wasn't installed before, only the installation files were stored on the c:\serveradministrator folder).

 

I have two little more questions:

 

* Like i've asked before, is it right to install the IT Assist on multiple workstations? (does the sql database have to reside on any workstation ? i think no ?!).

 

* On most of my MS server i've got the message that the storage driver & firmware are old so it won't install the storage management. Do i have to update them before installing that component ? and how that component installation is executed ? by runing the server administrator setup again ?

 

* I also have some servers with CentOS 5.1, what istallation files are the right ones for that OS.

* You can install ITA on multiple workstations, but you should not monitor one server with two installs of ITA.  Just install ITA on one system then use the browser to go to https://othersystem:2607.

 

* You need to update the storage driver and firmware before installing the Storage Management subcomponent.  You can install it by installing OMSA, or if it is already installed, going to Add/Remove Programs and modify the OMSA install to include Storage Management.

 

* As for installing OMSA on CentOS, that is not an officially supported OS.  You can use the install files for Linux, but you will need to change the revision file to look like a version of RedHat.

So if i understand you right, i need to install ITA on one system and see it's console and status from any other workstation by going to: https://ITA-System:2607 ?

 

I want to install the ITA on a server that allready holds ERP & AV software databses (they use sql express 2005 and are on the same instance), can i install ITA on that server on the same sql instance ? any suggestions ?

I'm not sure it's an option right now for me to install the ITA on a system without an existing sql.

In that case, if i have to install it on the server that hosts our ERP & AV software, should i create a new instance for the ITA before installing it and how ?, what name to give it ? (that server has a sql 2005 express on it).

It needs to be a default (unnamed) instance of SQL.  If all you have are named instances,  you will need to create a new instance.

Need a few more answers:

 

* Can the IT Assist 8.2 (that come from theOpenManage Management 5.4.0) be installed on a Server 2003 64bit ?

* Do the IT Assist installation require a restart to the server ?

* If the IT Assist in installed on a server that is on a seperate subnet from the managed servers, do i need to open particular ports between those subnets ? any more configurations needed for managing devices on other subnets then the one IT Assist is installed on ?

*No, it doesn't usually require a reboot.

*Monitoring systems with ITA on a different subnet is not supported because even with ports open, many routers/firewalls won't pass SNMP traffic between subnets.

Sorry for nagging but ....

 

* The only issue with installing ITA on a different subnet is the firewall passing the SNMP traffic ? there must be a way to monitor systems on a different internal subnet.

 

I've tried to install the ITA on a server that has allready an sql 2005 express, but on the prerequisite stage i get the following errors:

 

*  IT Assist does not support a nondefault instance of microsoft SQL server. To continue with the installatio, either install a default instance of microsoft SQL sever, or uninstall the nondefault instance of microsoft SQL server.

* Microsoft SQL 2005 express is not installed on this system. You must install MS SQL 2005 express before installing the ITA component faeture of the Management station. click the following link to install MS SQL 2005.

* The server administrator remote access controller service is allready installed. The management station remote access console can not be installed and will be disabled.

 

-- Are the two first messages conflicts ? (one says i have sql server and the other saya i dont havi 2005 express installed ?)

-- How can i continue from here ? i dont want to rename the existing instace so i won't harm my other software that are using i.

-- How can i install a default instace on the existing SQL server without harming my installed one ?

-- Regarding the third message, do i need to uninstall the RAC service from the administrator server by running its setup again and then install the RAC management that comes with the ITA installation ?

 

I appreciate your help, by guiding me with my issues, i've read all the documentation and there no specific instructions upon that scenario.

Can you tell me how to build a new default instance on an existing sql 2005 installation without harming the existing ones.

 

Can you give me the exact syntax cause i'm not skilled with SQL and affraid to harm the existing instances.

I think when you install SQL there is a part where it asks you to name the instance.  Click Advanced... and that will let you select a default instance.
