Creating client images with Open Manage

Question

Hello,

I've been using Dell servers and workstations for a long time but I've never bothered to use Open Manage.

I recently bought 8 Optiplex 745s and one PowerEdge 2950 and I plan to use Open Manage as much as I can. I remember reading that Open Manage can be used to make images of a workstation and to deploy them as well.

I'm currently working with one of the 8 new workstations and am putting it into a standard base that I will need to do to all of them. It would be really convenient if I could make an image of this "base install" and then deploy it to all the workstations.

Is this possible at all or am I dreaming?

What flavor of Open Manage do I need to install?

The only Openmanage product that can capture and deploy images to Client machines is the Altiris Client Management Suite.  It is not free but there is a free 30 day trial version.   http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/sys_mgmt/en/client_backup_recovery?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz

Hmm... Then perhaps I'm better off just going with something like Norton Ghost?

I am not sure on the cost of both products but I would select the most cost effective since you are only working with 8 machines.  Ghost corporate edition can do it as well as Altiris.
