ITA Asset Tags

How do I assign an Asset Tag to my servers? There is an Asset Tag field in the system setup on the servers as well as an Asset Tag field in ITA (assuming it reads the field in System Setup).

If it is a utility I can run, how do I get it?

100% Dell shop ... so I visit Dell website everyday. I have to tell you, documentation or FAQ's are difficult to find. One of the worst support sites I ahve used to obtain information. Now the download area is good, but not when you are searching for docs or FAQ's. Anyway, my two cents, maybe someone who cares is reading.

Anyway.....Asset Tags?

Thanks

You have OpenManage Server Administrator on those servers right? If so, you can set the Asset Tag under "Main System Chassis" and then under "Information". It's called "Chassis Asset Tag".

Let me know if you still have a hard time finding it.

Thanks, but the field is blank.  Well it should be blank be cause how does the PC know the tag number we use.  I thougt there was an Asset Tag utility that you run against the BIOS that inserts the numbers you use.

I'm pretty sure that OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) is the only utility that lets you set the asset tag.  And with it, you can set it through the web gui or through the CLI (omconfig.exe).  Come to think of it though, maybe you can set the asset tag via an SNMP Write on the OMSA SNMP Extension Agent.   I'll try that out.

If you are like us, we use that number as a physical tag sticker on the outside of the box, and it has a bar code.  Entering this number into the system allows you to report from ITA listing all your asset tag numbers.  Very handy for inventory.

Well, I couldn't get it to work by setting the asset tag through SNMP.  I gave up after I saw this posting:  http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-poweredge/2002-February/001521.html

Hmm.  After reading a little bit, that sounds like too much trouble.  It's much easier to use OMSA.  With the Asset Tag utility, you have to reboot each machine.  With OMSA, you can keep the machine booted up.  Why are you wanting to avoid using OMSA?

Release Title: System Utilities: Dell Asset Tag Utility, Utility, Windows Server 2003, English, PowerEdge 7250, A01 Release Date: 6/30/2004

Description: The Asset Tag Tool provides the ability to read and display the FRU fields Asset Tag, Service Tag, and PPID. It also provides the capability to update the Asset Tag field. This tool is executed from a command prompt in the EFI Shell environment.

This what I am talking about, but I need it for all my servers. Do I have to download seperate for each server type?

Not trying to avoid, I just can't find where to imput this information in OMSA.  Within the Server Administrator application I see where it has the Asset Information.  But, there is no field for "Asset Tag".  That makes me think that I can't only input this info from the Asset Tag utility.

Yeah, that's true, but OpenManage Server Administrator has an API that allows it to modify properties that are in the BIOS (F2).  Try it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Do this in OMSA to set the asset tag:

1.  Look for "Main System Chassis" in the device tree in the left pane.  It's below System.

2.  Click on "Main System Chassis".

3.  Then in the right window pane, you should see four tabs/links.  You'll see "Health", "Information", "System Components", and "Front Panel".

4.  Click on "Information".

5.  On this page, you'll see Chassis Model, Chassis Lock, Chassis Service Tag, Chassis Asset Tag

6.  You can modify Chassis Asset Tag right there.  It should be blank right now but you can enter text there.

7.  Then click "Apply Changes".  If you don't see Apply Changes, then you need to scroll down or set your screen resolution to something more like 1024x968

Hope this makes sense now.

No, the Asset Tag info is coming from the system setup (F2).  At the bottom of the setup page there is an Asset Tag field.  You can insert a number into that field with a Asset Tag boot utility.  I am trying to find that utility that will work on the servers.
